brake cable ends?

I put on an NOS set of Modelo speedy brakes on my 85 Campione replacing the black Modelo equipe brake set. In the process the ends of the new cable don't have the crimped on metal piece to stop the cables from coming out of the brake if loosened. What do you use to put on the ends of the cables, thanks.

Crimp-On Cable Ends...go to your LBS they will probably give you a few, or charge very little for them. Those are not for keeping the cable from slipping through though, they are to prevent the cable from fraying after cut to length.

? I never use those silly things:lol:

Crimp them on with a needle nose pliers or solder them.

Just takes a second either way.

OY! We should call Bike Social Services and have that bike put in protective custody immediately.

May I ask a question or two? Why did you change the brakes? I got the impression from your other post on your Bianchis that you had made this long and difficult search for two perfect original bikes, and I believe at one point you even made a snarky comment about how one of them was equipped and the experts being wrong. So why the change?

BTW if I was taking off those black Equippe brakes just to put silver ones on I would have gone with NR or Victory caliper.

PS: PM me your address and I'll send you a few.

I like to use heat shrink tubing on the cable ends. It's also an easy way to add a little color.

Yes, and there are a number of other ways to keep the cables from fraying. I've used a tiny dab of J-B Weld to coat the end of the cable. A cycling buddy used to use Super Glue. It works.

I think you are mistaken or reading too far into my posts. I was never snarky with anyone and if you got that impression I guess it wouldn't be the first time a woman has misunderstood me. To be clear so you don't have any misconceptions, I ultimately have wanted a 79-81 super legerra, the 81 del mndo I bought is a nice example of an original bike that I couldn't pass on and is an 81. The 85 is just a bianchi that came along and I bought, nothing special and I could care less if it's original. I plan on riding it. Thanks to those of you that had positive input to help me in my lack of knowledge for vintage bicycles.

You can also use a drop of super glue.

I had a Tiger 750.
Interesting bike.
Not good. Not bad. Interesting.

If I don't have the crimps on hand, I either solder or heat-shrink tubing.

prettyshady 03-17-12 03:58 PM

If I can't find any to hand, I can make them out of spoke nipples. I cut the head off, then crimp them on as normal. Quick job with my wire cutters.
