@Roman Z is your bike equipped with outboard bottom bracket bearings? Also, if I missed it please excuse my asking, what components are used on it also? Perhaps T-mar could answer this, when were the bottom brackets starting to use the different types of bearing placement and size standards? I believe that Roman Z 's bike has a cartridge bottom bracket from looking at his provided picture.

Apologies for so many questions interrupting this discussion, but I had not read about the special edition model for the 15th anniversary for US distribution until now. I would appreciate any information that could be provided about them.

Not sure about my numbers, but I know I finally got it dialed in today. Took it for its first real ride, the thing is a blast.

Hi Bill! This is GXP BB. I switched to SRAM Force 11speed group earlier this year, and before I had nice and shiny C-Record. I don't quite like the look of 4-arm carbon cranksets on vintage frames, and having derailleurs made of aluminium rather than carbon seemed more natural to me

I have to agree with your assesment of the matte black components and the movement to the 4-arm crank spiders. If the 6800 Ultegra wasn't so smooth shifting even my CAAD 10 would have a Campag silver group on it. And I was determined to move away from the BB 30 bottom bracket standard. Not really an issue though as I ride the two Campagnolo outfitted steel wonders more than my contemporary bike.

Are you moving back to the old school silver now? Just curious as to how you plan to equip it.

I feel so serial-number-deficient. Bummer.

I took my ~35 year old Tommasini out for a spin today. When I got back homne I drank a bottle of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. I think I went out for 414 miles. But that doesnt' seem right, does it? Or may be it was 14.1 miles. No, it took too loing for that. I think it may have been 41.4 miles.

A stop for lunch:

On the way home, a photo op of the Tophet Marsh Control Station of the Interplanetary Defense Network. I know that's what it is because I saw one on Star Trek once.

Outboard bearings go way back but their modern rediscovery was circa 2003 when Shimano introduced them on XTR. They transitioned to road a couple of years later on Dura-Ace and Campagnolo followed a couple of years after that. Not use about the smaller brands but lets just say mid 2000s as a general time frame.

The only thing that I have on the 15th anniversary special edition is the scan in post #594

Thanx, I knew that they looked out of place, I didn't realize they were different until I took a second closer look. Then seeing the casing of a cartridge bearing assembly caught my eye.

I was searching for something else and stumbled across a June 1991 Wm. Lewis advertisement celebrating Tommasini's 15th anniversary in the USA. The colour patttern is reversed in comparison with the catalogue pic that I posted previously.

Not sure what you're seeing as reversed. In the blurry water-logged picture you showed before, there were two pictures. The top one looks the same as this one (a special edition 15th Ann. bike in front of a regular SP in pink and white), while the bottom photo of the previous ad appears to show two other Tommasini paint schemes (neither of which is a 15th Ann special).

What's interesting to me is that some of the bikes with 15th Ann. paint have the older style seat tube graphics (stacked letters), and some have the newer style (same script decal on seat tube and down tube). Since these 15th Anniversary bikes were reportedly built in '90 and '91, that would seem to indicate that 1991 saw the introduction of the new graphics. The ad shows the earlier style, as one would expect since the ad photos would take some lead time.

I noticed this also on Rory Mason's blog, where he posted photos of a personal visit to the Tommasini factory in January 1992, along with scans of the company's then-current catalog. The bikes in the catalog all had the earlier style graphics, while all the actual bikes on the showroom floor had the new (and still current) style. So it would appear that sometime in 1991 the decals were changed.

I don't believe I've ever seen three tone marble paint. However, I also see what appears to be a number peg, so it may have been a custom order "team" frame. The combination of graphics, what appears to be Columbus SL decal and non-Air fork, have me leaning towards a very early 1990s Competizione or the European equivalent.

Thanks T-Mar

I just received a reply from Barbara,
Her exact words:
The frame is a Racing model built in 1986-87. The paint is original

I'm always reluctant to contradict Barbara, especially given that Tommasini is one of the few brands willing to correspond with members of the C&V community. However, based on old William Lewis advertisements, the marble paint was introduced for the 1987 model year. Also, the Columbus decal with the brand in a wide border at the top, was introduced for the 1988 model year. (Attached is a copy of the advertisement that Lewis was running in 1987 for the new marble paint schemes. Note that the frames have the old style Columbus decal, with the brand in a wide border a the bottom.) Finally, while the components may not all be OEM, they are mostly Chorus, which was introduced for 1988. The combination of marble paint, Columbus decal style and components all suggest nothing older than a 1988 model.

BUT, 1987 paint plus overseas shipping plus sitting in importer inventory plus sitting in LBS showroom then being built up for a customer could result in an early frame with later components.

I mean...it happened.

Given the number peg, I'm pretty sure this was custom and probably for a team. In which case, it wouldn't have sat around. Besides, it's got the tubing decal that came out for the 1988 model year.

Hi T-Mar

Thanks again for the poster. You are very resourceful💪🏻. I am Glad that Barbara did reply and I do understand that it could be a challenge for her to identify the bicycles.

I tried to search the web, Tri tone marble Frame seems uncommon. According to the seller, it did come with Chorus parts. I can only confirm when I received the bicycle.

Itís just a pity that he canít help to provide info with the history of the tomma. We all hope for that great story that we could share.

Your suggestion of a customised team Frame makes itís possible that someone could read this post and identify it. Always amazed by the power of the internet.
Thanks again for taking afford to help identifying. Meant a lot to me.
