TA adapter spiders
I was burning the midnight oil the other night at school and getting things cut out. I'm trying to get as much design and tested out before school ends. That way it doesn't cost me anything to make prototypes of ideas and can get CAD files production ready come time to send them to the fab shop that I found.
Right now I have TA/Stronglight/Nervar/Velo Orange adapter spiders made. These are for any crankarms that have a 50.4 bcd to be able to use a more common, bigger selection and better shifting ramped/pinned chainrings. One ring has a standard 130 bcd and the other has a Compact 110/74 incase you want to run that granny gear. Luckily I have Johnny "T-Dog" Thompson close by who was nice enough to lend me a pair of TA arms. Thanks John...don't worry I won't ever call you Johnny again but the "T-Dog" has a nice ring to it. ;). I should of listened to John as he told me just to do them in 1/8 and I did them in 3/16 material. They still bolt on but position the outer ring too close to the arm. But at least they fit absolutely perfect with the bolt patterns and clearances couldn't be more perfect. http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3144.jpg 130 bcd http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3149.jpg 110/74 bcd http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3165.jpg http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3162.jpg Fits like a glove http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3151.jpg http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3157.jpg http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...o/DSCN3152.jpg |
This is what I had to go off of. An adapter John gave me and my cheesy Harbor Freight micrometer that only reads to a tenth of an inch.
http://velobase.com/CompImages/Small...CF00ECC48.jpeg I was curious on what Velo Orange charged for their copies of these and was quite surprised as they were only $99 for the arms. The cool thing about those is that you don't need the hen's teeth TA crank arm remover and uses a standard crankarm remover. They charge $200 for the arms, two rings and mounting bolts. I'm thinking about picking up a set just to have a set. |
pretty cool.

Good job. What chainring spacing are you working with? If you want it to take ramped/pinned rings I assume you are looking at 9 and 10s cranksets for direction.
A 110/74 or 110/94 double would be a great idea for creating wide-range doubles. Also, are these flat plate with no lips for the rings? |
I actually have to make a 94 bcd version also. The plates are flat so I have an idea swinging around in my head to have the rings sit flush with the spider like they would on a spider with a lip or recessed section.

well the clearance between the outside chainring and the inside face of the crank arm
was always notoriously scant, so the relocation will let the current FD work better. spider out side of the chain ring, .. now routering out with the milling machine a counter sink to inset the crank flange into so there is a bit more space between the outer face of the chainring, and the inside face of the crank arm .. would be a welcome change. |
We don't have a milling machine at school so that route is out of the picture. Not to mention if I decide to take these further I want these to be usable directly after being cut on the water jet.

You're doing some cool stuff here man

Thanks Rob. My aim is to give life to older parts. The cages give a new life to a derailleur which is pretty limited in cog size. Not to mention if you want to stay full NR/SR but want a wider freewheel your options extremely limited for derailleur choices for staying Campy. Not to mention once you find a Rally derailleur their quite expensive and all you really want are just the cages.
The same goes for the crank sets with 50.4 BCD. They offer a really low q factor and are really nice crank arms but ring selection is pretty limited. This just really opens the door and gives new life to these cranks. I'm thinking of Renuovo Components for a name. |
Henry,
Once again, great project! Put me on the waiting list for one of the 110/74 versions once you get it ready to sell. And great name for the side business. If you need some pointers on an easy way to do your own website, let me know. I had a chance to try to fit the Nuovo Gran Sport "RallY" onto the Schwinn Sports Tourer currently on my stand. It would not fit with the funky tab notches Schwinn machined into the Huret dropouts in order to fit the Shimano Crane RD to the bike. I'm hoping to find the time over the weekend to give it a whirl on another project. |
I have a Nevar Crankset that can use those adapters. Cool. Great job as always.

"Cheaper" option for the 50.4 cranks. I picked up a set on sale for $75. The arms use a normal puller and come w/ self-extracting bolts. I put a VO outer chainring on (running 10 speed chain) and the arms are bowed a bit so there are no issues clearing any kind front derailleur. Nice adapter!

Hi Bob, the derailleur won't work right out out the box on those Huret dropout. I remember when John was working on my Sports Tourer and I wanted to use a NR RD. He brazed on some extra brass onto the hanger then filed it down to extend the stop further back. Otherwise I thought there was a tabbed washer adapter that allowed for Campy derailleurs on Huret dropouts. I remember this suggestion came up when I was asking for suggestions on other parts to make.

Very cool! I would probably purchase one of those if the design gets finalized!
|
The original adapter I cut in 1/8 that John has should work. I just have to find some 110/74 rings to test them out on and then flip the green light for production. I may hit up my favorite shop in town and see if they have any rings I could borrow and test them out on.
Would folks be interested in 144 and run the older Campy NR/SR and Sugino rings? |

Whatever common size that would allow cheap and plentiful chainrings in all sizes! |

Being someone who understands some Italian, I am often bemused and sometimes horrified by the way Italian words are misspelled or misused for non-Italian speaking audiences, such as in the United States (restaurants are notorious for this ... and if I hear one more "chef" on Top Chef call mascarpone (mas' car po ne) "marscapone" (mar ska' pon) again, I will kick, cry, and bite). Anyway, don't know if you know or care, but you could think about this: "Renuovo" connotes "new king." The prefix for doing something again is "ri-". The word for "renewal" is rinnovo (verb rinnovare). It seems like "rinnovo" is a pretty common brand name or marketing word for stuff in Italy. "Renovo" is already a brand of wooden bicycle. My suggestion is: Stella d'Argento Components -- Silver Star Components |
It's still up in the air on a name. Thanks though on the heads up about incorrect use of two words. I knew of Renovo and wasn't sure about this one because it's so close in spelling. Not to mention I'm moving to the same town as their located in just a few months and don't want anything to take place because of it. Hmmm...I'm not sure of the Silver Star Components name.

You have to admit, Stella d'Argento rolls off the tongue a little better! |
Do you guys have a lathe at school? You can mount it on an expanding mandrel and create the lips for the rings that way...

Henry
Did you advance the spiders any further? I have a set of old TA cranks and was looking at using them on a 1 x 9 MTB with a 33T (104bcd) or 32t (74bcd) chainring. Please let me know if they are for sale and how much. Thanks and kind regards... David |
Wow luckily I was searching through some older threads and found this. lol. I have a few spiders but never went any further once I graduated from school. I do have access to get more cut at work. Send me a email at Haphilemon3@gmail.com since you can't take pm's with your post count to discuss this more if you'd like.

Dang, another great idea! I'd probably buy a couple, as well as a few more Rally cages if they still exist!
Any thoughts on recreating the TA 144 triplizer middle ring for Nouvo Record cranks. It is killer! |
