Old Centurian-more information?

Just picked up what looks like an original 70s Centurion. Serial # is M5 J0044. Chromed lugs and dropouts (suntour). Bar-end 10-speed shifters, Suntour derailleurs, dia-compe levers and calipers, christophe toe clips, 27" alloy wheels. I'm familiar with vintage trek websites, but can't find anything similar for Centurion. I's post a pic but I've never figured how to do that. Thanks for any help.

There are instructions for uploading photos on the Forum. Maybe someone can cut-and-paste some simple directions for you. It is pretty straightforward.

As far as the Centurion, if you can't do pics, give us the color, description of the decals, exact components, etc. Just listing Suntour doesn't really help. Saying Suntour V or VX, or VGT Luxe is helpful.

+1 on what TugaDude said.

Sounds like one of the touring models. I don't know the 70's models.
T-Mar here might be able to help you.

Or, you could send it to me, ..."and I'll get back to you....."

:innocent:

Robbietunes-Here are pics, have no idea if I did this right....Anyway, the derailleurs on the centurion are suntour cyclone, the brakes levers dia-compe and brake calipers ____-compe. Cranks are suntour with a king logo. Thanks for looking!

I saw this bike this morning on CL and it's a beauty. Orange pearl paint with black components and chain rings. Old logo Centurion decals. Larger frame, at least 60cm. Not a touring model based on drive train and brakes.

Congrats on a huge score and a smoking good deal.

edit: vanbiker posted pics while I was typing.

Thats an awesome bike. I remember seeing one in a bike shop in the 70's. Great score. Should polish up nicely.

Look at those lugs!!!

Captain Blight 03-24-12 06:35 PM

DANG THAT'S NICE!!!

Superjelly. I think that's a first- or second-year Super LeMans, but don't quote me on that.

AZORCH 03-25-12 08:01 AM

I think the chrome lugs make it the touring model rather than the Super LeMans. Here's my (former) Super LeMans for comparison: http://www.flickr.com/photos/azorch/...7625334406359/ (sorry...the iPad isn't letting me paste images this morning for some reason.)

Thanks for the input! From everyone's helpful information, it looks like its a 1975 Centurion Semi-Pro.

beech333 03-25-12 09:20 AM

Isn't that a Semi-Pro? The orange and chrome look great. I'm thinking about a similar paint-scheme for one of my projects, if I ever find a decent painter near Chicago.

Edit: Oops, you beat me to it.

RobbieTunes 03-25-12 10:53 AM

Now, as you've bought into the cult, begins the descent into.........obsession.

vanbiker 03-25-12 09:06 PM

Well, its all fun. The paint and lugs are what really grabbed me about this bike. And even though I'm just under 6' tall, I have long legs and this geometry fits me fairly well....at least good enough to keep it and ride! I will post pics when I'm finished. By the way, the only missing part is a seatpost binder bolt....any sitting around your shop?

Chris_in_Miami 03-25-12 09:30 PM

Beautiful Centurion, congratulations on a killer score! I can't wait to see how this bike cleans up.

Chicago Al 03-25-12 09:59 PM

I've only seen pictures of that model, but all have shown it in that same orange, which looks amazing with the chrome lugs. I want one!

IIRC Centurion had a 'Professional' top model at one point then the 'Semi Pro' replaced it later rather than being the second model in the lineup.

There is (maybe you already found it) a 1979 Centurion catalog online, at the essential velobase.com site. It has the Semi-Pro, but a later version (and not that pretty orange either).

BTW that's one of the Sugino 'Mighty' cranksets (Mighty Competition, Mighty Tour, Mighty Mighty, Mighty Mouse, etc). It was a Campagnolo copy, hence the crown and fluting, but a desirable set itself nowadays.
