Apparently the later UK ones can be spotty, but SPB had it apart and blasted down to bare metal, and I trust his judgement on these things. These are also the smoothest friction derailleurs I can remember using; easily comparable to a well set-up Huret Duopar.
(I kept the original pedals, of course- I need the right shoes to make them work comfortably.)
If this bike comes up for sale. please let me know

I just bought a brand new 10" wide old school style skateboard with 65mm red urethane wheels. Have I officially gone nuts?
Nope, just grasping..................I sold my longboard at at 47 having come to the realization that I didn't want to explain to the paramedics how I broke my hip

Southpawboston's GS really makes me long for full fenders. Do any of the post 1980 frames have eyelets?

I got 2 1979 Raleigh Competitions GS(s)..

This one is full Campy and orginal. I got the reciept from the original owner's purchase. The only thing I changed was the bartape to Velo Orange leather to mached the Honey Brooks, different hoods. However, I am getting ready to snatch off the stock W. Concave wheels. And purchase some different wheels. They may be white. If I do that, I will change the bartape to white, and get rid with the Honey Brooks, and get a white look-a-like Brooks. Just thinking on the mods.. And no, the seat is not that high and the stem is not that high anymore.. I even got that long pump chrome pump that came with it too..

This one is the one that started me into bicycles. My son gave me this one over 30 years ago. Little scratched up, and some different parts, but it has got a sweet ride. In fact, I am on it today.

I am starting at age 44 though? I am a very young 44 though. I push myself on my road bikes(when I get time to ride them), and I ride my mountain bike offroad from time to time as well.,,,,BD

Truly fantastic looking bike. It reminds me of what the great (ex-rider) Walter Godefroot said (on the not really related topic of shorts): I don't care what colour they are... as long as they're black.

Could someone comment on the differences between G.S. and non-G.S. Competitions?

Thanks.

Non GS was the earlier models made in England by Carlton. The GS was Japanese made AFAIK.,,,,BD

I thought that the G.S. was for Gran Sport, as in Campagnolo components.

This is not correct. My 1978 GS is clearly labeled "Carlton" and "Made in England".

I think '81 was was the first year for the Japanese built frames? My '81 is wearing a this headbadge:

The change seems to take place between the '76 &'77 models. The progession also seems to be towards a tighter geometry and better components. The later japanese built frames share very little with there older kin

'76 catalog:
From the 1977 catalog:

So it looks like they changed the name from the Mk. II to G.S. when they equipped it with Campagnolo Gran Sport.

Don't over sleep or you'll miss this smokin deal on a Comp GS from a local flip-flopper.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that it's not mine, just on the local CL.

Looks to be the DKO variety of flipper.

Yeah, he didn't even bother changing out of his pajamas before taking the photo.

Anybody know what threads the Carlton Comps used on their headsets? Was it 26 or 24 TPI?

The bottom bracket on my '78 is English. I'd assume the headset is, too.

Anyone out there ridden or owned both a competition gs and an international? Can someone describe the ride difference for me. I have a gs that I am going to restore but I really want to find an international. Am I crazy?

Thanks,
Steve
