I don't know when AlphaRed actually sent it, but shnibop received it yesterday (I know this as we were wheeling and dealing on the phone last night). He's got photos ready, but is at work today and plans to upload tonight. He is planning on shipping the BOC on Monday or Tuesday - remember, whatwolf is not back from vacation until the 11th. This will work out perfectly.

As for punchfinlannd's question of participation while visiting the Colonies: what say you all?

I'd say cut in line! Nothing like some exotic crap to liven up the party.

curbtender 06-09-12 07:16 PM

I think it's cool he wants to do it. He does know this is a BOC?

shnibop 06-09-12 08:06 PM

As DrilliumDude has stated, I received the BOC yesterday after work, snapped some pics and was off to the movies (Prometheus). By the time I got home I wasn't in the mood to upload pics and post etc.

So here is the "as received" pic:

I have a gripe, there were a couple decent pieces and a fair amount of technically usable "crap" pieces in there, but there was more garbage than I had imagined.

The pieces in particular that should never have been placed in the box are:

-Suntour and Simplex/Peugeot front derailleurs, both with totally bent cages
-Suntour and Simplex/Peugeot rear derailleur, missing pivot bolt, jockey wheels and half the cage
-the used and utterly rotten strip of rim tape, just disgusting and worthless in all aspects
-all 3 warped brake disk rotors, I know these can be tweaked but these were completely gone, kind of hilarious
-Canti brake arms with almost all the hardware missing
-side pull brakes with no pads or cable pinch bolts

There were other pieces that I'd have been embarrassed to put in the box myself, but they were usable or only missing common parts such as brake pads. Those fall under the "crap" definition in my opinion and are fine for the BOC game. Also, there is a good amount of nice stuff that will definitely make someone happy!

Anyway, I'll be tossing out almost 50% of the stuff in the box and replacing it with nice, clean, unbroken, of some value items I've been collecting since I added my name to the previous BOC.

I hate to be the one to bring down the excitement of receiving the BOC for everyone, but I'm just the messenger and I'm hoping that posting this will discourage future recipients from filling the box with junk.

How about a new rule?

11. parts with missing hardware, or broken in any way, should not be included in the BOC?

For example, derailleurs with missing screws or hardware specific to that particular component that you can't just pick up at the LBS.

Spindles, brake calipers of all types without pads, headsets or bottom brackets without bearings, brake levers without hoods, even cranks without chain rings are all fine in my opinion.

What does everyone think?

Anyway, the BOC will be in the mail Monday.

I suspect that part of this is actually damage from the repeated shipping and poor packing that are part-and-parcel with the BOC game.

For example, I know those FDs were at least somewhat-serviceable looking when I purged the box (I threw out a bunch of stuff, scroll back for the pic of what I got rid of). The Suntour 7 FD was as-working taken off my old bike. The brake discs could also have gotten pounded at the box-bottom. Disc brakes puzzled me in C&V, though. :) Hmm...

dwellman 06-10-12 08:02 AM

When I had the box there were pivot bolts floating around the bottom. . . meh. Yeah. Some things just don't hold up well to repeated jostling.

Baggies, perhaps?

dwellman 06-10-12 09:20 PM

I added baggies and and "leftover" container. I did what I could.

GordoTrek 06-11-12 09:09 AM

i agree with not sending parts that are broken..kinda takes the fun out of it...

I'm not sure that is a very good rule. Here's why: some of us may just have a part we need from something that is I'm the box. I know that some of the stuff I pulled wasn't complete, but I can still use it, even if for parts for something I'm working on.

I do think adding baggies will help some and I put some stuff into baggies before I sent it off.

BOC is in the mail!

Left California for New York at 6:55am this morning.

Agreed; incomplete is fine - I enjoy making working derailleurs from multiple incomplete ones. If I find an incomplete VxGT with just the right mix of parts, I could make three complete ones. It's like playing bingo. :)

But actually broken or unusable parts I'd think should be avoided.

And it arrived in New York today! I will have it back in the mail in a fresh box (the current one is more of a roundish blob now) by Friday at latest.

As opened:

^ Dang, it looks like the really good crap floated to the top (as it's wont to do).

Looking forward to seeing pics of your picks; BTW, for anyone keeping score: shnibop did not post pics of what he removed only because he didn't remove anything for himself - he simply added stuff and tossed a few borked items.

Yeah - time for another box :)

If anyone is interested, we've gotten the BOC to 15 members in 2 months and 10 days as of today. According to my crappy math, that's an average of 1.3 members per week.

Good show, everyone :)

DD

photogravity 06-13-12 09:12 PM

Wow, there was some killer crap in there this go around! Nice showing guys and gals. :)

realestvin7 06-14-12 12:20 AM

I know I threw a kink in the crap earlier... I apologize to everyone (including DD) profusely. I can't go in to detail here but life has not treated me so well the last couple of months. As usual, I will keep on keeping on.

And I want to add that I am right there with the earlier gents (mikeybikes being one of them) that was disappointed in the quality of crap. Maybe that contributed to my procrastination. Maybe the BOC was just that depressing. Lol. The current crap is spectacular. I know I put perfectly working parts in there. They were a little dirty, but functional nonetheless. A lot of my stuff has actually been claimed as seen in the pictures.

I am also in favor of what shnibop said above, with the exception of leaving some good universal random pieces.

Drillium Dude 06-14-12 12:44 AM

^ Aw, don't worry about it - water under the bridge, you know :)

And hang in there - when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

So, you want to take your chances on a second go-around? Say the word and I'll put you back on the list!

DD

shnibop 06-14-12 01:30 AM

Might as well add me back to the list... I have a lot more "crap" to put in lol

Drillium Dude 06-14-12 01:33 AM

^ You got it - just as long as it doesn't contain a 172.5mm Campy crankarm set ;)

DD

realestvin7 06-14-12 01:34 AM

Yeah, I want in again. I got good crap.

Drillium Dude 06-14-12 10:32 AM

^ You're back in the hunt a second time :)
