The Mechanic's Forum has many knowledgeable posters, but the bulk of their knowledge revolves around not-very-old to new bikes.

It gets frustrating when you need *tweak* and they advise *frob* or even suggest outright replacement at the complete bike level. Because wouldn't everyone just be happier with a shiny new bike?

Also, they frown on rattlecan repaints. Powdercoat is apparently cheaper, as well as being more durable.

Its not cheaper compared to rattle can. $40 for all stages of cans vs $125 or so for PC and sometimes PC turns out uglier. Nice way to fill in the nice lug work on an old frame. You can always splurge and get aerosol cans filled with catalized automotive paint. Never tried it due to fumes.

Actually, it was whether you can go more than 10 miles without a bib. Or without eating oatmeal. Or something.

LOL funny, absolutely spot on about photography equipment forums and says a lot about forums at large and our ability to over think things in general. Personally I'm waiting for the new Shimano Hammer Impact Tool that requires SIS (Shimano Impact System) compatible nails with ramped heads, toolbelt, and cap combined with a wide range of hammerability. Although I understand that Campagnolo will be coming out with a fully rebuildable hammering system with beautiful polishing that will be better (2 generations from now).

Being as I'm on this forum I'll be doing a before and after of my vintage hammer that I found in a dumpster and which was forged by British artisans and not mass produced by Chinese labourers.

I have one of those rubber-coated mallets. Used it re-assembling my GT6 transmission last year. Can't eat oatmeal with it though.

I used to spend a lot of time on the single speed and fixed gear forum, but the day I turned 30 I could no longer understand what any of them were talkin about. Now it frightens and confuses me.

So did I. Now that I'm pushing 60, I appreciate chamois padding on my arse, especially when on my vintage saddle.

According to the article, he used 2 bikes, one with 40/15 and one with 39/16. I can't even imagine climbing the Rockies in that gear.

With such close gear ratios, it's interesting that he didn't just use a flip-flop hub. Maybe it saved time to swap bikes rather than fiddle with the wheel.

You may laugh, but my favorite hammer is one I fished out of someone's garbage one morning. It's a 12-ounce ballpein hammer with a quite slender, longer-than-usual handle. I have three others of the same weight and shape, and they are next to useless. This one almost swings itself. Don't even know how many rivets I've driven with it.

I prefer a Hart for framing, though, in the California pattern. I tried a Stiletto and didn't much like it.

Yup. They do a great job of dispelling the general public's perception that serious cyclists are all a bunch of enviro-whackos who think that cars should be banned from the roads.
