Help dating and rating Campy C-Record derailleur

Hi there.

I bought an old second hand bike which was a total mess with no value except that it had attached this C-record rear derailleur.

Itīs quite a bit damaged, but it seems to be 1st gen and hey, itīs in working order!

Could you help me dating it please?
Inside the parallelogram there is a number 20 and a 4.
Iīve see some other ones with a 21 and a 84, so, I am assuming mine is from 1984 because of the 4? But, the 20 looks like it could be an earlier alpha model??

As you see, itīs quite scratched with some bites made by the chain and umproper use..

Just as it is, how much could I ask for it?

Would it be worth dismantle it, and try to polish and restore the scratches? Would it rise itīs value?

And finally, is anybody interested right now?

Thank you!

It isn't first gen and is probably 1990s. Roger

It doesn't look like a first generation. Go to this site https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Home.html and spend some time looking. Roger

I am sorry, but I think youīre wrong.

Take a look to the 2nd gen models, The logo (campagnolo word) was laser etched, not engraved.

This is a 1st gen one like mine, but not from the very fisrt models, because the cage plate has a window.

So I still think mine is early 1st gen..

Yes actually it is first generation. C-Record came out in 1985. This appears to be one from the first year as it has the solid cage which was only on the first and maybe second years of the C-Record. Sorry Roger but I think you are off base here. Even Disreali Gears, which you reference, shows this as a first gen C-Record.

They are worth a fair amount but this isn't the appraisal forum. They can be de-anodized and polished up.

Yes, this is 1st Generation. I have one, too. 1985 into 1986.

IF it was NOS, it would command big $$. I've noticed, however, that used ones, especially scratched up, don't bring nearly the interest nor the high prices. And these seem to scratch up quite easily when put into use.

That said, cleaning any component up increases its desirability. Get every drop of grease off the pulleys, and do what you can about the scratches. I don't know about going the whole route of de-anodizing, etc. etc. IF you have the skills, and have a good looking specimen when you're done (BIG If there), then buyers might show interest.

The value in this RD is the art deco look and the rarity. It's about show, not use. Thus, only really good lookers count.

Otherwise, it is a great conversation piece. It works decently, as all Campy RD from that period. Nothing special by way of performance. Put it into a build. . .
