1985? Trek 600
 

I picked this up today because I've wanted an older trek for quite some time and the price was right. The PO said it was a 600 but the logo almost looks like it says 660...

I know it needs some work but I feel it is quite a bike for $120.

Nice pickup. Definitely a 1985 600. It matches the brochure pictures perfectly.

Very nice find. It doesn't look like it needs much work, I think you got a great deal! What's with the Tange decal on the down tube, did someone add that for decoration?

I agree with the OP the model decal looks like 660 and the link does not have a 660 model.

The two decals look odd to me too. Unless the stays and Mangalloy.

I'll take a better pic of the decals tomorrow. I thought it was odd but didn't think abut it anymore.

I'll concur with the '85 year. The shifter cable in the chainstay is the typical indicator as is the headbadge. Nice bike!

You will find that color of blue to also be used in the '84 racers as well. I have an '85 460 that has a few things in common with your nice example.

I agree on the 85 estimate too, I think that's the only year they made the 600. I have the same frame in a much smaller size (46cm?) that I'm going to be moving along at some point. They have very nice details like the "investment cast" lugs and in-chainstay cable routing. Mine still shows some of the original "600" on the chainstay protector as well, just fyi for further evidence as a 600.

Kind of a weird tubing label setup on your frame. I don't have mine in front of me right now but it definitely doesn't have the Tange label and while the catalog page says 531cs, I think the tubing label on mine is actually a 531c. Maybe they ran out of cs labels?

I took a second look at the decals and the tange decal has a few wrinkles in it so I imagine someone added it.

Later this week I am going to replace the bar tape since it is in rough shape. Other than that I took it for a spin this morning and I think it's a keeper.

Also I really like the cable routing for the rear derailluer, did any other bikes use that type of routing?

I can see that the silver along the edge is missing from when it was peeled off from another bike. I'd pull it off just to be sure it's not hiding anything. As any old surfer knows - don't buy a board that's covered in decals...

I have a Bianchi TSX that has similar routing - small hole for the cable at the BB end of the chainstay and a hole for a ferrule at the derailleur end. Mine has a cable stop recessed in the top of the chainstay, however.

It's a nice ride if you like sport geometry, mine is a larger size than yours and a bit flexy (but not a noodle). I haven't checked, but feels like the BB drop is greater than on my other rides. I bought a set of tubular wheels that will get tires in a couple weeks, and I'm wondering how they will work on it (and the Bianchi & A-D).

Here's mine, bought from a forum member a couple of years ago. Got to get around changing to white handlebar tape.

Very nice score. Those old steel Treks all have a great ride. Really superb bikes and you got it at a bargain basement price. I've seen similar Treks selling for over $200, and they sell.

I figured it was a good buy. A couple years ago I sold my 87 or 88 alu trek 1400 for $275. I wasn't really looking for a new bike since I'm brazing a cyclocross frame for the next race season but the price was too good to pass up.
