Trek 614 - First time wheel build

I picked up this bike to flip, and the wheelset was pretty nasty. I took em apart and polished the hubs and rims. Then I laced them up with 14g sapim spokes. I had to do the back wheel 3 times until I was happy with how it turned out. I think they look great, and the bike is going to be sweeeet! Just thought I would share with the group. I think this will turn out very nice. All original drivetrain parts will go back on -sugino triple with cyclone derailleurs.

Nice work! Nothing like riding on the first wheel you built. ;)

Thanks! I was checking out your Paramount thread today. I want to build a wheelset for my Prologue, and I can't decide between Open pros and Velocity aeroheads. I like how yours turned out and may go with the Velocitys in bright silver.

Welcome to the wheelsmithing club -- I have built lots of wheels over the years, and it has always been a satisfying and enjoyable experience.

Nice bike! I just picked up the same thing but a lot more "loved". It needs a lot to get it respectable again....

Congrats on your first wheel build! After you've built and ridden your first set of wheels you'll probably never buy pre-built wheels again. When I go out on club rides on my "modern" bike I'm one of very few people still riding a traditional 32 spoke 3x wheelset. Everyone else is riding Mavic, Easton, etc pre-built wheels with low spoke counts, but I prefer to build my own because they are easier to true or swap out a rim if I need to.

Beautiful work! Be sure to post an update when you hang the other parts on it. The paint on your Trek looks in great shape. I've got a similar project going, but my 614 was pretty rough as found. I've just cleaned and trued the original 27in Rigidas for now, but wheel rebuilds might be in the future.

Here is the finished project. The wheelset is so very nice, the bike is so much more responsive than before. If it were a size or 2 smaller, it would be a keeper.
