Just encountered a really weird thing withan ITM stem and bar......

So, I was starting out my Alan build project yesterday and I tried to put in my Mavic 350 bar into a 90's ITM clamshell type stem and dang it! the standard diameter (26mm) Mavic bar does not fit the ITM stem!. So I measured the opening on the clamp and Holy Cow! it has a clamp sized for a 25mm diameter bar....but the quill neck of the stem is not (metric) French sized. So I have a half French (at the clamp) and half English/Italian sized stem (at the quill neck)???
Soooo....I discombobulated the stem and bar on my PSV (The bar needed new bar tape anyway) to find out for sure and dang it! the 25mm ITM bar I had on the PSV fits the ITM stem clamp perfectly, so that bar is now going on my Alan build and I finally get to use my spare Mavic 350 bar and Mavic stem on the PSV. Lucky I had enough stash to keep both bikes complete, but I can't figure out why the 90's ITM stem would be sized at the bar clamp like a French stem. Anyone ever encounter this ITM stem split personality before??
I thought it was only Cinelli that did weird things with bar/clamp sizing with their 26.4 diameter bars.

Chombi.

I figured out what's going on. I measured the ITM bar diameter more carefully and it turns out to be 25.4mm not The French standard 25mm. I thought there was only the 26.4 and 26.0mm sizes on the non-French bars. I was not really aware of the 25.4 size.
I guess we learn something new to us everytime!

25.4 mm = 1 inch. It is actually a very common size. Among my bikes, it is the only common size (I think I have one bike with a 25.0 and one with a 26.0).

This is why you should never get rid of parts you don't have an immediate use for...

I had the ITM bar on my Peugeot PSV since the mid to late 80's combined with a French sized (it has the drilled dimple on the neck to signify French size) Cinelli 1A stem I bought the same time as the bar so I always assumed both were Metric sized (French) I even had the same problems getting handlebar plugs to fit into the smaller end holes as when I had the original Philippe bar/Atax stem on the bike. Just lucky I guess that the bar now fits the much newer ITM stem I have.
