Ouch! Broken Dropout
 

I was riding my Proteus touring bike. When accelerating after the light turned green, my chain broke. The broken chain whipped around and caught between the freewheel and the spokes. The wheel kept turning and pulled the RD up and around, which bent, and then broke the dropout. :(

I was able to unclip quickly and clear the intersection by carrying the bike. I then walked the mile and a half home.

I called Yellow Jersey, and they gave me a reasonable quote on replacing the dropout and repainting.

For now, my daily rider is the Cannondale SR400 that I rode for 24 years. Fast and agile, but not comfortable.

Yellowjersey did a fantastic spot repair job on a seat tube with several rusted pinholes and preserved some irreplaceable decals in the process. I think you'll be happy with the repair.

I was lucky enough to have a cheap Shimano derailer on there when my chain got pushed into the spokes, and the derailer broke cleanly across the B-knuckle.
Of course it was the cheap derailer that caused the problem in the first place, when the cage pivot ejected from the A-knuckle on the last lap of a race.
The wheel was damaged but the frame survived. The race was a total loss.

I know how you feel, I did almost the same thing on a vintage carbon bike and still havent been willing to foot the repair bill.

It did surprise me that the dropout broke instead of the Campy NR RD. There was no damage to that, aside from a scratch.

any chance your homeowners insurance will cover it?

I'm not submitting a claim. It is sure to cost less than our deductible.

I am not sure about over there, but here you woud be lucky to get insurance to reeplace stolen bike that was locked to your bed.


Too bad about the bike. I have seen aand repaired lots of bent dropouts but don't recall seeing a broke one. keep us posted. OH are you driving or shipping? I would ove to spend a day poking around the warehouse there at YJ

I will be shipping, since it is 300 miles one way. That would be a great place to visit.

Before I ship it, I need to extract the handlebar stem. So far, the wedge will not budge. I am giving it an extended soak in ammonia.

The hole for the adjuster bolt is the weak spot on those dropouts.
