Frame Identification help
 

I picked up this old red bicycle. I suspect it's a Raleigh type but I would like to know which model if someone can help. Serial # on bottom bracket is WS4006305. There is no badge or decals on it. It has the following components:
Shimano Arabesque double chain wheel and cranks
Huret front and rear derailleurs,Huret DT shifters
Weinman side caliper brakes and levers
Suntour Winner 5 cog freewheel
Normandy Hubs (rear has R 08 80 on it)
Weinman concave 27x1 1/4 rims
Miche pedals with clips
half chromed fork and chain stays
tops of chain stay painted yellow also yellow triangle on top of fork crown
Three holes where ead badge would have been.
No seat or post.
I will try to attach some pictures of lug work.

Do you have a pic of the whole bike? and maybe one of the B area?

That's just red fiber tape that is under the water bottle clamp. I tried to insert pic of bike but it was too large to accept. Will try again after thread is moved to proper forum

If your looking for an ID on the bike this is usually just as good as the regular C&V forum.

OH was therea seatpost and do you know the diameter? that may help

Unfortunately, there isn't any seat post or seat. Apparently there aren't as many people visit this section as visit the regular C&V forum. Is it only the moderators that can move a post?

Some parts of the frame look Raleighish, but I think its not.

Attaching a pic of whole bike, not sure that will help. As far as I can determine the serial # may indicate built in Worksop Dec. 1974. Not sure of that however.

Thanks for the replies. I just checked the specs for the Super Course MKII in the provided link and most don't seem to match. Googled the lugs and those pictures that I found don't seem to match either. Not sure if this matters, but bike weighs 22lbs and 23.5lbs if I add a cheap saddle and post, whereas the Super Course specs show 27 lbs. Granted some of the components on this bike differ from that listed for the Super Course MKII. Here is the picture of the lugs that I googled.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=249308

I wouldn't assume the components are original. What's the seatposts size? That will tell you much about the tubing.

I certainly won't assume that they are. There wasn't any seat post or seat with it. I just measured the ID of the seat tube top with a caliper and it is 1". That is without a seat post clamp in there. Does anyone have a picture of a Super Course MKII showing close up of lugs?

Jawihan-

Your frameset looks to be middle to upper level Carlton/Raleigh. The W prefix usually gives that away as being Worksop built along with the unique centrepull bridge that ony Raleigh and Carlton used. As well, the half chroming and lack of derailleur tab seem to narrow your purchase down to a Super Course or a Gran Sport. Check the fork. If you look down the steerer tube and see a ridge, the tubing is high tensile and the bike is a Super Course. If no seam, then check on the outside of the steerer tube for 531 id. If it's 531, then you have a Gran Sport. Good luck on the search!

Defnitely a 1974 Raleigh or Carlton of some sort. You need to measure the seat tube I.D. more accurately. If it is about 26.4 mm, that's plain-gauge 531. If it is 27.2 mm, that's butted 531. If it really is 25.4, that's gaspipe tubing, so more like a Grand Prix. My guess is Super Course (if 26.4), but possibly Gran Sport (if 27.2).

not a Grand Sport, for sure. i have a '74 GS, lugs have different cuts.
Grand Sport used 'Bocama' while SC Mkii used 'Prugnat' lugs—same one used for Competition Mkii but with different cut—according to the catalog.

OK, so we are down to Grand Prix or Super Course. Depends on the seat post size....

That makes sense for 1974, too - those were both very popular models at that time....

The color seems to make me think more Grand Prix than Super Course.

The paint looks very non-original, though....

Thanks everyone. Yes, it appears to have been repainted and fitted with non original parts. The lugs match those on Nlerner's nice example of a Super Course MKII, so that's what it will be----Thanks Neil. I have started dismantling it and will check the frame for being true and straight. If okay, it is a good candidate for stripping the current paint, etc.
