I notice that with metric bolts, the diameter implies the thread pitch. There are exceptions, but it seems that 5mm implies 0.8mm pitch and 6mm implies 1mm pitch. Is this correct?

In ISO metric threading standards, there are coarse, fine (like UNC and UNF for imperial) and even extra-fine. Most of the smaller-diameter threads used on a bike are coarse. A fine 5mm thread has pitch 0.5 mm. Axle threading used on a bike (9 and 10 x 1 or 0.75) is considered fine thread. 35 x 1 mm threading is no doubt extra-extra-fine!
