OP posted a link to a completed ebay auction where the final bid was 5 times what he got for his similar item

I think the intended communication was why did his sell for such a small price in comparison to the one noted that went for near $1,200. US.
This one went for more than I would have expected given that it is clearly used, but there were at least two people who felt it was worth close to the ending price.

In another thread I advised that original paint, chrome and transfers are worth something. This auction reinforces that opinion.
Many of these frames got used as a race bike and did not get TLC. Nice clean original examples are noticed.

forget what I got.I watch these auctions all the time and I've never seen a price like that for a comparable frame.Notice all the superlatives used in the description.A real sales job.partly innacurate(It's Columbus SLX,not SL)I learned a little about marketing on this one!By the way. It looks like a repaint to me.

Two people with deep pockets view ebay at the same time and like the same bike. Get in a massive bidding war, as wel as ego match... They bid the heck out of the bike and to the winner goes the spoils!

Then matching bike is listed. Winning bidder could care less as he's polishing his bike. Second bidder is all in a huff and ready fro a fight to win this one... BUT... nobody else is out there bidding against him. His $1000 minimum bid hangs in limbo as nobody challenges him. Auction won at $225.

Look who's laughing now...

Why is any ebay weirdness remotely surprising anymore?

As several people mentioned, there are two things going on here. The OP's Pinarello was a repaint, with chrome painted over, and listed with poor quality photos. When I see a frame with painted over chrome, I assume the bike has had a tough life and the chrome was beyond salvation. Poor flash photos made it hard to distinguish paint chips and reflections. This presentation makes potential bidders assume the worst.

The Pinarello in the link is a more recent frame, with original paint and excellent chrome. While the pictures were again poor quality, everything they showed looked very good. That's what it takes to create the "i gotta have it" emotion for the prospective bidders.
