how do you remove the dustcaps off of campy pedals?

I know there is a tool, but is it for the old classic ones?
I have SR from the early 80's

thanks

mike in finland

You just insert a 5M hex key and turn counter clockwise, right? If it is stuck try a penetrating lubricant and lightly tap the dustcap around the perimeter.

umm, there is no 5mm on the campy pedals- the competition pedals were a lot easier.

I think you're thinking of the crankarms.

with this or the MKS equivalent:

Sorry, I failed to see the word "pedal" in the thread title.

Anyhow, without the tool I'd just grab the cap with ChannelLock pliers taking care to put rubber/cloth/etc between the jaws and the cap. Turn counter-clockwise.

as I thought- off to the LBS again!

channellocks- I have learned long ago that there is no substitute for the correct tool.

I was not going to muck up my TI SR headset and BB using a hammer and chisel- I went to my LBS,

for the beer money to use the right tool is cheaper then having a very devalued campy goodies!

thanks all

I just had this issue yesterday...

I just tapped it off using a very soft aluminum 'chisel'. No marks, very fast and easy.

There is a Campagnolo tool, but I used needle nose pliers for years before I had one...

7 bucks! i can afford that!

miamijim 05-11-12 01:35 PM

Yea but the campy tool has the proper hex opening for removing the axle...

puchfinnland 05-11-12 01:44 PM

Naw, Im cheap....

now if sombody has an extra peanut butter wrench I could use that!

Italuminium 05-11-12 01:45 PM

Hm, I was able to get them of with my fingers. The previous owner greased
the threads well and screw the on just tight enough. But as we know, Merckx rode without them for weightweenieism, so that's cool too:)

Is your cap like this? Before replacing the original caps, I wrapped a couple rounds of tape around it and use a pair of small needle-nose. The caps were shot anyhow but didn't get a scratch on them.

He did? Got pics? I know he, and many others, ditched the crank bolt dust caps. Wouldn't the pedal bearings need servicing after a decently dirty or rainy ride?

For the hour record, not road races.

Ray Dobbis has an article on his ste on making an Eddy bike. He removes the dutcap and paints the axle ends yellow.

Small channel lock, works great, doesn't %&$# 'em up at all.

Old Yeller 05-11-12 05:01 PM

If this bike is a "rider" and your dust caps are original and in good condition, I would swap them with MKS replacements just in case you lose one. New Campys are pretty pricy these days.
