Turns out the thieves cut a hole in the back of the garage with a sawzall. Put somebody through the hole in the wall, open big door, cut the locks, and viola....no more MX bikes. $12k gone. Insurance paid $1500.00.

If they want your stuff, they will get it.

The solution is there, insurance, more of it. Reminds me I need to go talk to my home owners carrier.

I had a conversation with my insurance agent about my coverage. "Are my bicycles covered?" "Sure" "Well, I have quite a few bikes, along with specialized tools" "No problem unless you have more than about XX worth of bike stuff." His number was not even close to enough coverage.

I need to go Monday. Thanks for the reminder.

I used to lock up my bikes when I had a 3 sided garage with no closure. You can get a 20' Krypto cable for less $20 nowadays and I just through it up over the beams. I had enough bikes in there that a couple of low end tempters could be taken, but not anything precious. Your level of risk probably depends heavily on your location. But, the wrong time, wrong person and you might be missing your favorite ride.

lock them up! I had a miyata titan stolen out of my garage. Luckily it wasnt a super nice bike, but it was still kinda nice, and bike theft feels terrible

This ^^^ and it doesn't hurt to check on your coverage annually. When I had the last herd of bikes stolen the insurance company had cut the limits on bicycles and tools and we got less than 10 cents on the dollar for our "covered" loss. Funny thing was they never bothered to notify us that the policy limits had changed. Needless to say I know longer use that company.

I also agree with the doggie deterrent. We have a rescue mutt that is part Shepherd and part Retreiver and very very smart. She will also no take kindly to a stranger in her home unless she has met and approved the stranger in our presence. If she picks up on fear, anger etc. she will know something is wrong and escalate warning.

Otherwise, she loves people and is really sweet when meeting peeps and kids when she's with us. She's just protective of her home and her people. I actually got home one night at around 1 am after a night drinking and she and my wife had gone to bed. She ran to the door with a series of very clear warning barks and then stopped to make visual confirmation. She got lots of praise from me and an extra treat that night.
