Looks pretty nice. Cool BB shell. What are your plans for it? Apparently my size too...

You may want to check and see if that's a repaint. Some of them had a lot of chrome exposed. You may have something like that under that paint.

Montellos usually had full chrome rear triangles.

Looks like a repaint and whoever put the dt decals on made the mistake I made by putting them on to low

+1 on the repaint. If that's supposed to be Bordeux red, it's a bit off. Could just be the white balance of the camera too. Here's my Montello:

It's been refinished as well, but with matched Bordeux Red by Al Wanta. I'd say the pic is pretty true to life.

Edit: Different year/model Montello, so color could be right on for all I know. Sweet project nonetheless. Good luck!

So the story is that this past winter I went to the house of a good contact to buy a pair of pedals. He had the Pinarello frame up on a stand and it caught my eye; just my size. As can happen on these occasions, I went home with more than I'd intended, tho' at a good price. Two days later, thinking that I really had too many bikes on the go, I offered it to a friend for the price I'd paid for it; he declined, so it remained hung up on a hook from my garage ceiling.

Then, my wife, who loves her old beach cruiser Raleigh with huge wire baskets on the back, to my surprise asked about getting a road bike. I gave her my beloved Pinarello Treviso (3 cm too small for me anyway....) and realized that I now had an excuse to restore this Montello.

So, yes, it was a repaint and yes, normally the Montellos have full chrome rear triangles. The chrome under the paint job was fairly degraded, had probably been sanded and primed. If it had been the original paint, I may likely have kept it original. However, since it needed a complete re-do, I decided to try the cromonero, since some of the original Montellos were sold that way. I figured that I would never need to worry again about paint chipping, but I never thought that I'd end up fussing about fingerprints.

and voilà.........

All Super Record, except the seat post (I love that C-record areo post). The rims are Nisi Contendere, with DT Revolution dbl-butted spokes.

Cool! Almost like a reversed color scheme, read components instead of read frame.

Old Yeller 05-31-12 10:15 AM

Hey MikeTe, what size frame is that?

MikeTé 05-31-12 09:57 PM

It's a 54cm.... perfect for me.

I was out for a long ride again today, loving it.

I gave my old Pinarello Treviso (52cm) to my wife when she asked about getting a road bike to replace her old beach cruiser. That gave me the excuse to build this one. I've never ridden a "modern" bike; this is the bike I could nowhere near afford 25 years ago (and it was so much cheaper now).

I showed the bike at my LBS; the owner was quite enthusiastic, being an old-school racer... All excited, he said, "We sell new Pinarellos; take this one out for a ride!" I declined, he insisted. I declined again and he asked, surprised, "Why not?!!" I said, "Because I'll buy it!" At this moment in time, I don't want to ride any other bike that might risk giving me more satisfaction than this one.

I still have to post up some detail pics.
