Barcons are certainly worth far more than the $20. Yes.
I bought a $20 bike recently to get the V-brakes from it. Stripped the other parts that I felt I could use and gave the remainder away on freecycle.

Yep - Keep the barcon and part the rest of it out. Bet you could squeeze at least $100 out of the parts.

And even if the rest of the bike is trashed, I bet there are some other reusable parts on there: seat post, stem, handlebars, brake calipers, RD jockey wheels, QR skewers, bb cups, even cable clamps. It all adds up. So if none of my list is usable, well, the barcons alone are worth it. The old Suntour barcons had the neat (to me) SS cable housing, I would salvage that too (usually there are two pieces, one for each barcon, plus a piece for the RD and another piece for the FD.
I picked up what to me was a really, really, beat 1974 Nishiki International a while back. I took off the red plastic crank dust covers, and the crankset. Everything else went directly to the co-op. I asked them if they wanted it (it was rough to me). While I was standing there, a customer walked up: "Hey, cool frame, is it available?" "Here you go". I'm pretty picky about the condition of paint and decals. So what might look like a total POS to me, might be a real cool bike to someone else.
I've picked up super cheap POS bikes, real crap, for $5 or less, and just salvaged a saddle, pedals, a V brake noodle, and so on.

Exactly. Shows what I don't know. I looked at that bike and just saw "DONOR". Frame did not meet "picky bill's" criteria, and I don't paint bikes (at least yet). You can see how nice it turned out for RS! I just didn't have the vision to see it. I did see the value in parts, and paid accordingly. (At least I did have enough sense to get that sheared off seat post out of the seat tube). The parts will go on another bike, and the frameset is now alive and looking good.
There was a line waiting for that frame. And shipping frames is pretty reasonable, so why not offer it up on the list, at a low cost. Let someone with imagination turn it into a nice, sweet bike.

The barcons are on a beater Takara and one appeared damaged. There is another Takara mixte there, also $20, with a Suntour V-GT on the back and a dinged-up Sunshine/Araya wheelset. Neither bike is in ridable condition. So maybe I'll hit the sale later today and give them a two-fer offer. My hesitation arises out having wrapped up three build projects recently and the garage is just starting to be navigable.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Looking to do the same thing myself, and for the same parts too! Now I just have to wait until the right one comes along.
I applaud all of the membership for being so helpful and equitable when it comes to trading and selling parts, too.

A 20 dollar 80's donor Schwinn got me a great condition Araya alloy wheelset with 6 speed freewheel, Dia-compe brakes, Sakae SX crankset, index Shimano light action drive train. Other parts were passed out to friends.
In a few words, yes. It has helped me with other projects and put a few more items in the partsbin.

Consider it buying a pair of Suntour Bar-cons for $20 and getting a free bike with them.

Jack of all trades
Man, that hits too close to home. My "man cave" as SIL calls the garage was just starting to get navigable, then I saw two old MTBs for sale, got them for $10 and $12, now I can't navigate again. Story of my life...

Sure, why not?
Last bike I bought came with a free extra bike! The guy wouldn't come down on price but threw the second bike in. It's Italian but gaspipe, too big for me anyway. But it had Universal brakes, which I traded to a local friend, and Campy shifters which are going on the 'hero' bike. Aside from that I hope to get a few bucks from the frame; come to think of it I may put it up in the FS and/or FT thread. I need to get rid of it though, I don't even have a proper mancave.

YES!
It's better to get whole, intact bikes but if the price is right donor bikes keep the cost down. Many parts have found their way to one of my bikes. I'd replace the barcons with DT, if possible, and resell.

I just paid thirty for a takara because of the barcons.( I really love suntour barcons) Then I got it home, and looked, nice drop forged diacomp stem. VGT derailers, SR post, and the alloy wheelset is in nice shape... realized that the bike had never been ridden. SO now I don't have the heart to strip it, even though its a really heavy frame.
