Lyotard Pedal Question
I am in the midst of restoring my Bertin. The cranks on it are TA cranks that had Atom 700 pedals mounted on them. I picked up the Lyotard pedals below thinking that they would fit but the threading seems to be different. Does that make sense? It seems as though the TA crank is French threading and the Atom 700 are the same but the French Lyotard pedals are not French threading? I guess this also means I won't be able to thread on my Look clipless pedals either (I can't do toe clips much anymore and was hoping to put the Looks on for long rides and Lyotard for short rides).
Cheers, Guy http://gallery.me.com/danspeirs/1009...13383569250001 |
Lyotard made non-French threaded pedals. You likely have one of those.
You could retap your cranks if you are serious. |
x2, i have the same pedals and they are 9/16

I have French and 9/16" Lyotards. I'll probably never use them all.

In my very limited experience, if the pedals are French, the ends of the axles will have incised D (roite) and G (auche) rather than R and L.

The No. 23 pedal was available with 14x1.25, 9/16" x 20 or 1/2" x 20.
Tapping the TA cranks to 9/16" is easy (they're soft). Punch the little aluminum disc out, use plenty of oil and good taps and it's a job done in under 10 minutes. |

To avoid galling on the tap.

TA, Atom/Maillard, Lyotard, Stronglight, etc. all made equipment with both French and English threads, so it's also possible your cranks are English and the pedals French. I have a set of MB23 pedals with 1/2" threads as well, I have no idea what they were intended for.

I would love to find a pair of those in french thread for my Gitane!

Kroozer, your 1/2" x 20 Lyotard MB-23s are meant for one piece(ashtabula) cranks. It's nice to score them unused, and swap spindles from a cheaper used pair of regular/al MB-23s. I also tip my hat to Fat Freddy's cat.

Those mod. 23 pedals came in English, French, and American (1/2" x 20tpi) threading. The good news is that spindles from the Lyotard 45CA pedals are interchangeable, so if you can get a set of those with the proper thread, you're golden:

Thanks for the reply. When you say "Punch the little aluminum disc out" which AL disc are you speaking of?

Thanks everyone for the input. A buddy tapped the cranks tonight and they came out great!

See the pics. The little disc/cover is sometimes missing from the backside of the cranks. You have to punch it out in order to run the tap all the way through.

Maybe that's why my cranks sold for more than I expected on the bay, they were 9/16x20 with their caps intact.

My LBS recommends soap as a lubricant for tapping aluminum cranks. There's a reason why, just can't recall it now.
Does not make any sense. I've been working as a Professional Automotive technician Specializing in Automatic transmissions for over 40 years. I have tapped and repaired hundreds of stripped threads in Aluminun. I have always used oil, and have never had a problem. I wouldn't use Soap on a bet. I have tapped two sets of cranks, used oil on the taps then too. Oh, I used soap to clean up the mess I made. |
You have to make sure the pedals have short threads or they will push the discs out from inside. I think Lyotard made a version of some models especially for TA cranks.
