Am I crazy?
 

I am new to this forum but hope to become a regular poster. I have been lurking for a while now and think most people in this category are pretty reputable. I have been looking for a nice late eighties / early nineties Italian road bike for some time. I recently came upon a small fortune and have been drooling over this bike on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=150832336445 . It seems like a lot but it's everything I am looking for. I have been scouring Craigslist in St Louis and have found. Nothing comparable for the last six months. His this bike worth it? How inflated do you think the price really is? What are some ways to verify its authenticity? The seller is reputable but still I am skeptical. Any help is greatly appreciate.

That's a nice find - and it's in guideline condition, too. Period-correct C-Record, first-generation Ergo and Deltas. It might be just a little high, but remember: you might pay more if you pieced that together yourself.

It's definitely authentic - and original.

If it's got everything you want - and you say yourself you came across a small fortune - then what the hey, right?

It's not junk, that's for sure. FWIW, most of us here are cheapskates at heart, so you may hear a chorus of "too expensive", but that doesn't really mean it is ;)

Good luck - you could do a lot worse than pick this beauty up and ride the snot out of it.

it's a super nice bike, i have the exact same group on a celeste bianchi i own, with campy rims.

if you want c-record and a nice frame, Drillium dude is right, building an identical one would be more expenseive.

I would buy the Fondriest on the EastSide (but not at the asking price), assuming you need a 58cm TT.

I saw that. It's not lugged and a little too new... Thanks for affirming my desire to purchase this bike. Ive been wanting to piece an old bike together for a long time, but this may solve everything. Would switching the ergos for downtube shifters be sacrilege?

I got to work on one at the shop a couple days ago. Beautiful. Do it

It looks more to me like a Montello than anything else, which was the top of the line model.

BTW, the hubs are C - Record, (Record Strada) with the brake calipers being (not counting the real/very rare 1st generation)

2nd generation, along with the rear mechanical. The 1st gen rear mech, to my "unbiased" mind, with it's blanked plate design

is better looking, but has a rather bad habit of the "stop" breaking off, which leaves us with - the 2nd gen was more durable.

As you will no doubt find, the price will be long forgotten as you "pride of purchase" remains.

There are more experienced builders than I on this forum — lots of them, but I DO know what it costs. I've gone over the pics. GO FOR IT!

What's a small fortune windfall for if not to spend on things that will make you happy for a long time? As long as it fits. And sure, you could put downtube friction shifters on it. It has the standard Campagnolo braze-ons that those housing stops are screwed into now.

Just remember that this is only the starting bid. If you are really lusting after it, you may find yourself paying much more in an auction war.
