Perhaps you should take that as an omen and buy the 60cm Ironman....

I think that we might need to add a swap meet to next year's event. We could hold it in the parking lot of the Fire House and give them a cut of action

Maybe by next year I will have completed my Medici project and be ready for something else. Actually, I'm thinking I can do a parts swap from the Bianchi to the Medici and have it ready (but unpainted) for the North Shore Century.

The North Shore is a fun ride (and flat ).

Not yet sure if I'll be riding it, as my father-in-law will be in from England, and it's a bit rude to leave him alone at home for too long (my wife likes to ride as well). But, I'd say it's a 50/50. I can probably ride, but would have to stick to 50 miles so that I could get back in time for lunch. We've done the shorter routes a few times with a group of friends and then usually go to the Celtic Knot for lunch. Top notch pub food, and Smithwick's on tap. Makes for a nice post-ride lunch.

Like an idiot, I charged the first hill, stayed on the big ring. Very stupid. The second hill found me walking. Yes, the 2nd hill. The third hill got my head out in the open, and I realized I was going to be on 39/26 a lot. The strategy worked pretty well until Gov Dodge park. I ended up walking in four places.

Random thoughts, as I sit here in WV letting the caffeine wind down....:

Nice to see Indiana get rain, even if I had to drive through it.
Man, this group has some ace bikes.
It's amazingly fun to ride amongst Medicis, old Paramounts, Mondonico's, etc.
I've never ridden such a difficult course, but I had more fun than any ride I've ever been on.
Best ride I've ever been on. I mean, bratwurst at rest stops? Awesome.
I've never ridden so fast so often in my life. Or so slow. Gotta love hills.
The "Chicago Seven" group really showed how to ride together.
Sincere gratitude to iab for the framed poster, immensely.
It was a privilege to ride with you guys.
Yes, you can get a Charley Horse in your quads while driving

My sister cried when I told her what gomango said about America being "right here."

Next year? No doubt.

Aug 10, 2013. See you there.

PS: David. Ullrich, the guy that owns that building, is actually moving to Hollandale, I believe. My brother-in-law Jerry works for him up on the ridge; we rolled right past his plant (fancy schmancy steel/wood furniture). His business is doing well, even in these times. Your market can come to you......a lot of them are here in the summer, anyway.
This is going on my "to do" list for future bicycling events. Out of curiosity, were there any tandems on the ride?

I saw 2. One was husband and wife, dressed in cow kits and their bike painted like a cow. Les told me they are a club, Couples On Wheels.

That is hilarious! I'd love to see a picture of that! They must have both had enormous quads to get a tandem up those hills.

As striking as they come.

That picture is truly epic! Out of curiosity, am I seeing this right? You don't have cages on the pedals? I'm just curious since most people I know make comments about the fact I ride my Norman Rapide without toe clips.

Yeah, I encountered them at a rest stop along the way. I thought the bike was very cool. As I recall, the wife had knee-high socks with cow spots as well. They were clearly into it.

The other tandem was a silver Specialized, modern, and they had matching kit. I can't seem to remember what he looked like, but she was blonde and petite with a long pony tail. I followed them on my second loop in the park, and there were no cars in front of us...

I heard him say "don't worry, this will be fine." As they rocketed away from me, she said, more than once, "I wish you'd slow down, I really don't like this...." I can only imagine the feeling of going that fast on a bike, not being the captain, and having no control over the speed, the brakes, or steering.

North Shore Century...wow sounds fun, but no way I will be up for even the 50 by then...ugh. I am going to try this 25er as it will be more slow and fun than anything else...E_Merlin found it so it is on the TODO for now.

You are right, no toe clips.

I have big, wide feet. Even the XL Christophe clips are tight on my foot. Toes go numb in about an hour or two.

Makes climbs a bit more difficult, but it isn't as bad as numb toes.

OOoh, that sounds fun. We might have to get a Chicago group and meet you in Milwaukee.

Also, I will be riding the North Shore Century with a group of folks that will probably evenly split between the 25 and 50 miler. My father-in-law will be in visiting from England, so we can't leave him at home for too long, so no century for me (although a flat century feels like a piece of cake after the hilly 100k at the DD). So, feel free to come down for that as well. Nice scenery, and a great lunch afterward at the Celtic Knot. Best pub food in Chicago and, of course, beer.

Yes, and I see they are hosting this year's edition of the Midwest Tandem Rally on Labour Day Weekend. Good on them. They usually get 500 - 800 tandems for that one. (Susan says, "No woman ever wants to dress up in anything that makes her look like a cow!!!")

Re the other team sighted by Robbie: Rule One in tandeming is to never do anything that causes your stoker to doubt her trust in you. What you heard would count as spouse abuse among the people we ride with. And, since the lady on the back seat is the rear-admiral, it would cost the captain his command.

I guess my better half is just too trusting... Back when I had my last motorcycle, a 1993 Honda CBR1000F, we managed to go an indicated 140 MPH on a long stretch of road in Montana. We've bombed down hills on our tandem at speeds well over 40 MPH with nary a peep. I think she might just be a speed junky in disguise.

You have peaked my interest for sure(North Shore Century)! I promise to keep an open mind, if all is as you say...maybe that could happen based on how this ride goes (Steel is Real) Hmmmm fun stuff for sure. I suppose a Milwaukee trip for you is really not so far?
