Darn...Cinelli

1971 Cinelli, Rose color, 58 cm on DC Craigslist. My size, and missed it. $1200

Anybody here get it?

Ed in Toronto 06-23-12 05:13 AM

Yes, give yourself a smack on the back of the head.

iab 06-23-12 05:21 AM

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190691902919...#ht_500wt_1413

Needs paint. But under $1000 with shipping.

bibliobob 06-23-12 05:56 AM

Let's put it this way. iab might get to see it in person. I'll give a full report when she arrives...

Time to go to the basement to see what I can sell to pay for it....

That's pretty cool.

Show pics here when it arrives. I'd love to see it. The one in the ad didn't show a lot.

bibliobob 06-23-12 06:09 AM

Will do. I received additional photos before sending money, but nothing that merits posting. Plus, I don't want to jinx myself (which is why I didn't post anything earlier). But, I'll post photos and the full back story when she arrives.

rootboy 06-23-12 07:01 AM

Oh, you dog you, Bob! Congrats. Can't wait to see this. A grail bike if there ever was one.

bibliobob 06-23-12 07:45 AM

Thanks much. Keep your fingers crossed. I count no chickens until they're safely in my hands, without bends, dents, or seized seat posts. But, it sure seems worth the gamble....

I have some doubts about this bike. It has a 27.0 seatpost... The fork looks like it has been impacted... Plus the dropouts are missing the eyelets... Lastly, to get the steel bars to peel like that requires considerably abuse, so I am very leery about the inside of the frame. I am certainly not willing to put $1000 on the line with that much doubt.

PS: a friend of mine is supposed to go and see the bike in person this weekend before the auction ends, but having spoken with the seller, I have my doubts about it being a Cinelli.

iab 06-23-12 08:25 AM

The seller said 27.0?

Did he measure? Those steel posts rarely have stamps.

Hey Bob let me know when Cino arrives so I can see the beauty and pull up with my Pinarello for you to see. Thanks Mike(gioscinelli)

I had a similar thought but thought it could be the angle but we shall see

Heck, in my book this photo doesn't say "Cinelli" to me. Check out the stay end treatment:

Regarding the Craigslist purchase, I'm surely looking forward to pics and a report on that one :)

For a late 50's or 60's bike this type of stay end treatment is in no way impossible. I have seen a few that look like this (however all with eyelets). Remember that Cinelli was still using quite a bit of Reynolds tubing back then and Reynolds supplied preformed, pre-notched stays.

Yes, he claims to have measured. It might be a Cinelli, but it might just as likely be something else, and without seeing the bike or having it checked out thoroughly I am not willing to risk anything.

I was thinking more the quality of the treatment. The seatstay transition looks fairly well defined, but the chainstay transition almost looks Schwinn-Paramount-ish. Just doesn't look consistent to my eyes.

similar vintage, similar consistency of the brazing: http://classicrendezvous.com/images/...r/rear_der.JPG

Hmmmm...maybe.

Thanks for the link - one of the coolest derailleur pics I've ever seen (stolen and added to my collection!) :)

I agree the fork appears to have taken a hit. but things happen, and the frame does not appear blemished. The drive side rear dropout has the spring hole above the derailleur mount which does help place it a bit.
On any of these old soldier bikes the components to me are always suspect to indicate much, too easy to exchange.
Be good to see head badge mount holes.

I imagine it will get some interest that results in a bid or two.
Bigger than I would consider. And the cost to refurbish is not insignificant.

ftwelder 06-24-12 05:19 AM

The head angle is about 82 degrees or the frame is bent.

ericbaker 06-24-12 05:23 AM

Just this weekend I got a line on a '74 rose cinelli from the original owners basement... for a moment I thought he might have put it up without telling me and I was going to have a little heartbreak, But it not the same size, so hopefully I'm not jinxing myself and can make a deal for my own rose cinelli, gotta be honest though, it might take a little while.

Congrats bibliobob! Sounds like a fine pickup

Resurrecting this Zombie Thread with New Photos

I haven't posted here in a long time, but figured that I'd share some photos of my most recent build. The rose Cinelli that i posted here ended up being too small for me, and i sold it to a CR list member. But, i ended up picking this up, and finally rebuilt it. Just got it out for it's first real shakedown ride yesterday.. She's a keeper, for sure...
cheers,
Bob
