Sheldon Browns Brooks Professional VS Modern Brooks: my butt hatchet

http://imageshack.us/clip/my-videos/27/uoca.mp4/

Here is a video demonstrating my utter frustration with Brooks. I hope they will consider a warranty claim on this damn thing. I would like to point out that the thickness of the 70's professional is no thicker or thinner than the Flyer saddle in the video.

I find it fascinating that I was able to tension Sheldons saddle without trouble...I know Sheldon says don't touch it...but It needed a few turns now it's nearly good as new. I'll be mounting it as a stand by while I get a warranty claim sent to Brooks.

Brooks finally responded to me...now will they deliver the goods...we'll find out.

how many times did you turn the adjustment screw on that flyer? 60 or so? Just curious.

Next, on Criminal Minds...

The team is asked to assist and advise on a gruesome case in jolly old England. A deranged lunatic has been skinning hides from employees of a popular leather goods maker and using them to make bicycle saddles. The team gradually begins to suspect the unsub has had a psychotic break over molestation by a seat post. The only witness heard a voice complaining about losing his Dr. Scholls. Can they catch him before he begins changing his MO to imperial cuts?

What do you guys think would happen if I put my finger in this meat grinder?

hairnet 06-26-12 03:22 PM

200+ lbs everyday for the last two months and my new Brooks is still a rock. -shrug- maybe I should tension it and douse it with oil to speed up the process

KonAaron Snake 06-26-12 03:24 PM

More importantly, what do you think would happen if you pull my finger?

gomango 06-26-12 03:28 PM

Hopefully not something that looks like that Schwinn photo.

SoreFeet 06-26-12 03:46 PM

Now that's a hot Schwinn. If you like burning bikes you might want to get a Schwinn Varsity or Stingray...They take the best beatings of them all...Plus the kickback bendix hub is a real joy.

Well at least you won't need a headlight at night and cars WILL stay far away. :crash:

Is that a bar tape fire? All the more reason to go with cloth.

I dunno, is shellac flammable?

rootboy 06-26-12 04:43 PM

Not after it's dried. ... I don't think.

hold on......

-holiday76 06-26-12 06:14 PM

I believe that was actually foam grips.

Amesja 06-26-12 06:53 PM

I thought foam was supposed to put OUT fires...

Taking this seriously for just a moment... The two saddles are different designs. The first is sprung and the bars that tie the nose to the cantle plate look skinnier than on the pro. The cantle plate itself doesn't wrap as far around the sides as the pro's does. The leather sides are also cut higher near the nose than the pro. Finally, it has three holes in the top.

Comparing the relative stiffness of these two saddles makes no sense.

I have Brooks saddles on maybe ten bicycles. Some are from the early 1970s; some are modern and a few are in between. About half are Professionals and the others are B17s. I can't see a difference in quality between the oldest and newest. They all work better for me than any other saddle I ever used. I have rarely touched the tensioning nuts.

Although I haven't owned one since 1969, the sprung Brooks saddles I have seen recently are definitely softer than B17s or pros. This seems designed in. You may hate the saddle, but your video isn't likely to convince anybody the saddle is defective or shoddy.

You found the secret! :thumb:

Seems only yesterday when my Byzantine History professor, the esteemed Dr. Walter Emil Kaegi, was telling the class that the recipe had been lost in the sack of Constantinople, if not earlier.
