Just finished up this 1988 trek 850. Here's the specs.
Started with a 1988 Trek 850 triple butted Tange frame that was broken at at the right rear drop out. A friend that's a certified oil-field welder repaired it and Glen Thompson spread the rear triangle to 135. SRAM X9 derailleurs Original Shimano brakes with 600 Shimano levers. I'm just a wanna-be, I know, but I installed a set of Origin 8 drop bar ends last night and rode my '93 Raleigh for three hours today and am very impressed.

Those are 26 X 1 1/4" Forte from Performance Bike. I think they are their house brand. Not sure. I had bought them for street use on my old Gt outpost but took them off when I needed to convert the GT back to full time mtb use. They are actually pretty comfortable. |

How are things? I'm looking forward to seeing what build you put together with the 20" ATX frame (and the Klein-esque colored Ross too). I have to ask, what tooth count are you running on your 1x__ set up? Seeing it in the "big, big" configuration is really working that derailleur. Does it shift well into that big cog? As always, hang in there my friend and keep up with the bike builds! Peace, -D- |
Thank you guys for the thumbs up but I must confess that was my first go and the learning curve was rather steep. My experience level is not like yourself or Vonruden's consequently I am definitely in the "more error than trial" skill set. For example I learned a really good lesson about ChainWrap capacity of the short cage X9 derailleur. And that was one of many lessons learned but I had Huge Fun doing it.

I'll be PM-ing ya on that. I'm definitely not giving up or in. And the N+1 fun continues. I've dug out the Sedona ATX frame from storage this weekend. It's a 20" x 23" (top tube) oversized thin-walled CR-MO frame I was given this Spring. It's a pretty cobalt blue, but the finish is trashed with specks of rust and worn down to bare steel. It'll get repainted, just have to pick a color. The 105 RD is beyond its max of 28t. But has been working. It's not ideal for sure. It did drop the chain a few times going into the big sprocket. The 105 RD was donated from rccardr, and the only RD I had on hand. I'll be stripping some parts off the Hardrock....the brake levers, Deore DX cantis will go to the Sedona. While the ZOOM drop bar is destined for the Ross. The Sedona will get Deore DX and XT gear that I've recycled. And will be a proper 8x3. |

Vonruden, you won't have any compatibility issue with those 1st gen. D.A. bar end shifters as long as you stay with the same cog specs for SIS. You could get more gearing in the back if you run them on friction as opposed to the indexed SIS setting. I just went through all this with an '86 "Deerhead" XT (6 speed) rear derailleur and a set of 8 speed brifters. I wanted to run the 13-32 6 speed freewheel that came with the "Deerhead" group, it hit most shifts at the extremes but jumped around with the 3/4 cog shifting. I installed a 7 speed Sachs freewheel and that was even worse than the previous I ordered a 13-32 8 speed freewheel, that nailed it! I needed to keep the index shifting with the brifters but I've done this many times before with bar end shifters and friction shifting, I've gotten away with an 8 speed set up using a 6 speed bar end shifter. You'll have to be patient and continue to push the set up to find the limits. I don't see why you couldn't get 8 or 9 speed shifting with the 1st gen D.A. bar ends on "friction" as long as you run a capable rear derailleur with the limit screws adjusted properly.

Did the shake down run on Saturday afternoon and Sunday it started raining and is supposed to rain through Wednesday so it's going to be a few days before it will get to see any dirt. But will let you know. I'm concerned about even the gravel road performance of those 1 1/4" tires. Will certainly let you know which one of us comes out on top, it or me.....lol.

Thanks for the compliment but I think that home run may have bounced over the fence..... I had an issue with the first crank. I had a brand new TruVative fiveD crank in all black that was in a batch of parts that I bought. I bolted it up and it looked great on the predominately black and all was well, or so. I thought.
I finished up the bike with the exception of installing the chain and the pedals. Weekend before last I sat down to install the pedals so I could take it in on Monday for a chain. The right pedal went on fine then I tried the left on and it wouldn't start. Thought the treads might be jacked even though they looked fine so I tried another left side pedal that came off one of my working bikes.......Then I discovered why that crank was such a good deal. The non-drive side crank arm had a 9/16 right-hand thead just like the drive side. i was really proud of myself I didn't throw anything..... I just went and got a cold beer out of the fridge. |
^ Wtf! I'd contact the mfr and tell them someone goofed. I don't see why they wouldn't replace that whether you bought it used or not.
