Finally cabled and built up that old fat chance Into a drop bar mountain bike. Total kitbash of parts- tricolor STIs, two different generations of XT derailleurs, some deore cranks with a modern SRAM cross ring and finally a use for the Scott drop ins I've had squirreled away.



The big question is whether it can pull off this tape:

Have some fenders and continue town and countrys that will probably end up on this, but other than putting tape on and fighting with some fit nuance, I'm there.

hahaha I have some of that same tape.. haven't been able to find a bike that it goes with yet though the neon pink with purple and turquoise is hella hard to color match.

Whoa! First, let me say I'm a n00b at this stuff but I've been eagerly following this thread since last summer and keep wondering why I haven't put drop bars on my '93 rigid MTB.

I mention I'm new at this because I hope this hasn't been asked a million times before. If it has, I haven't seen it.

STI brifters work with Deore XT derailleurs?

If so, that changes everything in my mind. Bar-end shifters don't really appeal to me. Having quick and easy shifters at hand as on a straight-bar MTB is pretty nice, and I didn't want to lose quick shifting to gain drop bars.

But I could go for STIs! My RD is a Deore LX and I assume the front is too but don't know for sure sitting here at work with the bike at home. (Yeah, I drove the car today. I know, I know...)

Can I just slap on a set of STIs and just adjust the cables without any major surgery? My understanding has been STIs require "road" derailleurs, not "mountain" Ds.

I was pleasantly surprised by that too- I knew that rear derailleur would work, but after years and years of people around here being all about road shifters and mountain front derailleurs. So far so good.

Finally, the perfect stem to try out a dirt drop conversion or just run a modern bar... lots of rise and oversized... the options are endless. salsa woodchippers? my salsa flat bar. metropolis bars? okay okay maybe some of these won't fit through the bend but I am still stoked I can run modern OS WIDE handlebars and not have have a hideous adapter. I'll hang the bar in the window for the summer to even out the fade. And with the almost 25 hours of light we get a solstice... well it should work quite well.

@ frantik - what brand tape is that!? My 1992 Specialized Hard Rock Ultra is hot pink to purple fade & begs for tape like that. Will motivate me to out some drop bars on it!

Hey congrats on the winning bid! I just read your interest in mine if I plan to swap it out. I'm going to hold onto it for returning the Haro to its original setup some day.

Just a warning though the bar tape is neon/fluorescent pink.. i haven't found anything it matches honestly

I still have the stock (steel) dirt drop style stem, but this bar/stem combo was laying on the bench so I slapped them on to take a look. They might be staying. Thoughts?

Hey Squeeze,

Running STI brifters with mountain derailleurs is possible but I'd suggest some inline cable adjusters and patience to dial it in. John Tomac won the 1990 World Championship using a Dura Ace brifter with a XT rear derailleur. When I redid my 1988 Cimarron LE, I used the 6 speed "Deerhead" XT derailleurs off my 1986 Cimarron with some Shimano Sora brifters and a new 8 speed freewheel. I opted to go with the Sora shifters because the ratchet and thumb trigger mechanism closely matches the Campy Ergo shifters. I figured if the set up worked well, I'd swap the shifters later and do a ShimErgo set up. The "Deerhead" components are built like tanks and with the adjustment screws and inline cable adjusters I was able to hit the full range of gears using a double crankset. It's possible but will require some trial and error in setting it up, it's all part of the build and part of the fun.

My just completed Bridgestone, I planned to go with Salsa Woodchippers, however they didn't fit with the Nitto Dirt drop, luckily my local shop had these nice moustache bars. I plan to swap out the tires for something more cross friendly and get some cages on the pedals. Rides very nice.

Yes, I really like Moustache bars, got them on my Zeus fixed gear beater. Some don't like them, however I find em to be very comfortable. Looks like I will have to build something else around the Woodchippers.
