Sixty Fiver

My Moulden comes in at just under 24 pounds (with the light bar andpedals) and was lighter when it had it's carbon composite crank but that now lives on my Rocky Mountain Blizzard which is a hardtail with some beefy Kenda 2.3 tyres... with a Reynolds 725 frame, 3 pound suspension fork, and those tyres it is 26 pounds and with the lightweight XC folders it drops down to under 25.



As an SS it was 21 pounds with no special parts... lighter folding tyres will replace those Schwalbes if they ever wear out and then I'd shave off nearly a pound.

My Rocky is getting a new suspension fork with a lockout so it is gonna gain some weight.

Naw... keep it to a minimum, like on my Smorgasbord! All those years bombin' all over town on my BMX with nothing but a crappy rear brake, I never needed anymore than that the sole of my Vans to pull off a dandy Flintstones style stoppie. Nothing has changed other than the wheels got larger, the frame got lighter, and I fluffier! Vans are still doing well more than 30 years later, they got me through my days as a sponsored BMX racer and sponsored skateboarder, they'll still doing the trick and now they are my lil' angel's favorite brand of kicks!

p.s. I had a triple butted Ben Lawee frame too, I sold it to a friend and years later he still refuses to consider selling it back (bastard)!

Finally finished the High Plains conversion. When I found it at the coop, the bike had been mostly stripped of parts and was going to be scrapped. The frame was just filthy, almost black, but I noticed the lugs and rescued it from the scrap dealer. The High Plains did not have a 70/70 degree seat tube/head tube mountain bike geometry but a more touring bike-like 73/70. It took a couple of hours of determined scrubbing to get the frame to a more-or-less presentable state. Even then, the paint was yellowed to some extent on the stays and bottom bracket and I could not get it to white so I repainted the stays with white Testors and the bottom bracket shell and lugs with black. I also did the dropouts in black and decided to name the bike 'Blackfoot'. Trying to color match white of varying shades was an exercise in futility, I got as close as I could and called it a day. I incorporated a Sunlite front rack with a VO decaleur and a Blackburn Mountain rack from a Trek cop bike I found at the flea market. The cop bike also contributed the Matrix double-walled/eyeletted wheelset. I used a $5 Sakae crankset from the Trexlertown Velodrome bike swap and $25 worth of chainrings from the VO Garage Sale. The bottom bracket is a Shimano UN55 cartridge. The Nitto rando handlebars were $5 from the Velodrome as well as the $5 Suntour Vx-GT derailleur. Shifters are Suntour barcons from the coop. The cassette is a Shimano 7-speed 13-30 from the LBS. Brakes are Tektro CR720s from the VO Garage Sale. The brake levers are Tektro RL340s, also from the VO Garage Sale. The front bag is a $5 dSLR shoulder bag from the flea market.

With the fat tires, the bike is fun to ride. It was totally worth the time it took to clean it and build it up.

I wonder how much such a beast would weigh built up as a drop-bar?? Any ideas? Can I safely assume that this year's model is 4130 double-butted, welded not lugged/brazed...

They're some almost-NOS (used but I couldn't tell) Axioms I picked up on eBay for $15. They seem to fit with the bike pretty well, but are about as waterproof as paper towels.

Pretty sure thats the partially lugged '92-ish frame. I think the Criss Cross was the lower end Cross Cut, but I may have that backward. One used a mix of hi-ten and straight gauge chromoly as I recall and the other used hi-ten and double butted chromoly. If it is the lugged version, they have weird geometry. The top tube is extremely long, and they have a very steep head tube angle (I measured mine to around 73deg) and a low head tube. That said, I had one built up with a Nitto Northroad bar, flipped for some drop, and a very short (60mm?) high-rise dirt drop stem. I actually liked the way the bike handled setup like that. It was not a light bike by any means (mine was a single/dingle speed), but fun. I've been keeping my eyes out for another one if it came along cheaply enough.

94 model CrissCross was built with straight gauge Cr-Mb and 28 lbs stock. Can't say about the the 92.

well yea of course they do, lol...they are not vintage but they are light. I have a set of Sakae SP-155's I would sell you. Came off a Univega UNO, they are all aluminum and very lightweight.

My 1990 #2350 so 91 yr model Schwinn High Plains that I have enjoyed as a flatbar MTB 21" frame

The dilemma, the 1991 Karakoram elite GT I just got and will keep as a flatbar


The solution, turn the High Plains into the dropbar bike I need to have !
