How do I line up the chainline for a 1x9 so that I don't have to worry about the chain falling off the big ring up front?

I would think that you should line up the chainring at 42.5mm, just like you would make it centered on a double.

I know that makes sense and maybe I'm over thinking it but when I was setting up my bike originally before I installed the FD the chain would fall off when in the biggest cog in the back..

Removing chainrings is my favorite thing to do, either for resale or for building to my own taste. Except I just put together an all-terrain touring rig with a triple... the exception that proves the rule. I've got pics of others all over this site, but here's the latest 1x: A Fuji Opus IV 1x10 for the local crit-style club rides.

That’s how I always do bikes. I never used to use the front derailleur anyway, and getting all the junk out of there makes it a lot easier to keep the drive train clean, especially in the winter.

I always thought the whole idea of a 1x drivetrain is so you could run a traditional chainguard and ride in long pants w/o a clip or other inconveniences. Surprised to see so many single chain rings here running naked and exposed.

(1x8 Alfine IGH Lambert; a wintertime long-pants kinda bike, for sure)

I like it because of of how much easier it is to keep crud from building up around the chainring and bb shell. In Minnesota winters especially, I think it makes a big difference to be able to easily wipe off the chainring and surroundings for keeping the drivetrain running smoothly.

One thing I really like about my 2009 Handsome Devil steel frameset it its versatility, its been a compact double, a triple and for the last 7 years a 1x9 set low with 11x36 cassette and a 36t chain ring for the hills of West Seattle.

No, not original paint; it came to me with terrible 1970's repaint. I made the decals myself, based on good photographs.

Nishiki 1x8 thumb shifters, campy crank and bb, deore derailler, sram cassette, nitto dirt drop stem, nitto promenade bars (IIRC), brooks b17 it has silver fenders now, and the paint is much more beat up.....rattle can job, looked good, not durable.......and yes I need a longer chain someday

When converting to a 1xn setup, did anyone have to change out the bb? I'm doing a Trek 370, originally 7speed cassette and going with an 8 speed (more common) and the originally was a double front crank with 113mm. Looking at a Claris rear setup with index shifters.
