Golly! I've been pretty much doing nothing for the past couple of years but ditching double chainrings. Older, wiser (?), lazier? Mostly restomods, in no logical order...

In the spirit of Halloween, I'm reviving this zombie thread. SCARY!!!! Whooooo-haaaa-haaaaa-haaaaaa!

This week's 1x conversion, a 2005 Waterford RS22, with Richard Sachs Newvex lugs. Converted from Ultegra 2x10 STI to SRAM Force 1x10. Just posted a coupla different pix to the "Retro Roadies w/STI" thread.

Last week's project was a 2010 Gunnar Street Dog, built w/cantis and wider tire clearance, 1x1. It was already 1x1, I mostly cleaned it up a bit. Skirts C&V being tig'd and all, but steel, and Waterford. Still, just one pic:

2 weeks back, 1x'd a 2001 Waterford RS11, built by Dave Wages. Decided to go SRAM Rival 1x11:

And so it's not just Waterford product, here's a 2005 Kirk Terraplane:

And a 1990 Serotta Custom 'cross frame, built by Serotta builder Greg Fuquay to be his personal 'cross race bike:

1x cross/gravel bike. A combination of Columbus Life and Zona tubes. To be honest, I’m not sold on the concept of 1x for any use outside of a cyclocross race. While you can get the gear range you need, the gaps between the gears grow. I’d prefer to have closely spaced gears rather than a large range of gears. To me, a closely spaced cassette and 2x up front is the most efficient solution. 1x is just spending more money to revert to 1970s gearing.

Sears 1x5

Sears Free Spirit 1x5. It actually has a very decent Asian built frame. I pulled it out of a dumpster a few years ago - it's too small for me though.

Never sure when resurrection is appropriate, but there are some cool bikes here, so I thought this thread deserved a jolt.

This went from a 30+ pounds to 25, and had me grinning today on the test ride. Black cotton tape in its future. 46 x 14-32 5 speed.

Many people don't think "rocket" when they think of 1x.....

They should think again....

What's interesting to me about this topic is that when I was growing up in England in the early 1960s, I was very much interested in derailleur bicycles (though I couldn't afford one) and the only ones I knew of were 4- or 5-speeds (usually with Benelux, Cyclo or Simplex derailleurs, with single chainrings. I was unaware that front derailleurs even existed. It wasn't until we emigrated to the US that I saw a 10-speed for the first time, which was rather odd since Americans mostly treated bicycles as kids' toys rather than useful transportation or sports devices.

Now that I live in the SF Bay Area, the idea of a single-chainring bike seems absurd, given that pretty much any ride around here involves anywhere from 2,000 to 8,000 feet of climbing.

Got it. Thanks. But why didn't anyone tell me about this TA crank? It's sweet.
