First Bianchi - black '82? '83 '84?

Just the 52cm frame, bottom bracket and a set of handlebars, picked it up today from a guy that was going to convert it to a fixie. Couldn't let that happen. $40. As far as I can tell, the Ishiwata Magny double-butted and Piaggio stickers date it to about the 82-84 time frame. Anyone have knowledge on this? Paint is dinged and the decals are peeling a bit but the threads are good, no cracks or dents. The headset is smooth. One of the rear dropouts is missing the adjuster bolt.

What would the bike have had as components originally? Suntour?

Don't know: might be one for BianchiGirl...the catalogs I can find show that Bianchi offered naked frames made of Ishiwata in '82 and '83, but they had better lugs and forks and the only one made of Magny was a touring frame...later catalog scans don't show any of the Japanese models as complete bikes, until one '86 but it's a Tange frame...this Sport SS has shown up before in the C&V pages, so if you search the archives you may find more info on it (black is the only color I remember seeing this model in).

I used to have a red Japanese Bianchi Sport but it had plain gauge Mangny tubing and a high tensile fork, but had the same lugs and geometry as this one.

It looks like you have a '83 Sport SS frame, and that DiaCompe 500Q brake looks OEM. The Catalog says it came with shipmano 105 drive. it was 5 up rom the bottom so likely is a basic Sport or upper recreational model. If you have the parts on hand to build it it should be a nice rider.

Thanks! I have, um..parts. It will be an eclectic build. I have Suntour FD and RD. I may try to get a second Dia-Compe brake or a set of early Shimano Dura-ace centerpull brakes, I have these on my two Schwinn builds and like them a lot. I have a couple of 126mm/120mm 700c wheelsets. It will have some sort of triple in the front.

I just picked one of these up today with 6-speed Shimano 600 components and Modolo brakes. Might this suggest 1984?

Another question: I'm going to replace the Shimano with Campagnolo componentry, but I'm a bit puzzled by the bottom bracket. As best I can tell it measures to 68 mm, suggesting that it is English, but my 1985 Bianchi Campione D'Italia has an Italian bottom bracket, and I assumed that in the 1980s Bianchi used Italian BBs. Not that I know enough to assume so much, of course! Is it possible or likely that the Magny requires an English bottom bracket?

If you have a Sport SS just like the OPs than someone did alot of upgrading to a bike that came with Mnagalloy frame. Again if it is a Sport SS like the OPs it is Japanese (or somewhere in the orient) and therefore has an English BB. Your Canadian Bianchis were different from ours up until about '89/90 do you have any pics? Esp the decals and tubing stickers. Unless I had the estra stuff around I am not certain I would put Campi on a frame of this level.
