1050 shimano hubs, rear dust cap questions..?
I am about to replace the freewheel on an original shimano 105 hub/uniglide/126mm/6sp - and I just read some information about the plastic dustcaps..?
I am not sure what to avoid on the dustcaps or how to remove them - particularly the hub side. Sounds like they are broken if you look at them funny...
Do they hold the bearings in? How are they removed the correct way? will another freewheel screw on the existing threads? How can the existing freewheel be removed? I have a freewheel removal tool that looks to fit into the splines of the freewheel, however the plastic dustcap seems to seal off the hub.
Thanks in advance!!

I'm only familiar with the Shimano 105/1050 uniglide freehub system. If they still offered standard hub/freewheel hubsets for 1050, then can't help you there.
The freehub/cassette set up has a plastic dustcap at the freehub end, and a black plastic dustcap at the NDS end. This one is crucial, as it's hard to find a replacement. It's rather large, and covers the cup and cone. It's made of rigid plastic, tends to crack due to age.
The older 600 (EX) hub uses the same dustcap, but it's chromed.

non drive side is the dangerous one. Dropped this one too many times, ended up having to get a new hub
