I like #4 best but white tape has practical disadvantages. So I voted for #2. Splash tape is nice on some bikes.

With the frame already busy (in a nice way), I'm inclined to suggest a solid tape. I'd go with white or black cork. Additionally, the black hoods make a nice balance with the saddle and BB.

I agree with this. I'd go with black Fizik regular microtex, not the soft touch. But I realize I'm swimming upstream.

Looks like wrk101 (and supporters) carry the day. Honestly, I was this close to pulling the trigger on the white/purple fade (poll leader, BTW)...and I came across this newbaum's cloth bar tape, in a shade that uncannily matches. Much better than any other solid purple tape I've seen, and better than the shade of purple in either the F.U.B.A.R. fade tape or the Cinelli black/purple splash (which always held a little piece of my mind):

I do like cloth tape for the grip-ness of it and the sleek elegance, and got reacquainted after borrowing another member's bars temporarily on a recent cross-border ride. This, I think, is a little less flashy (or tacky) than I was leaning towards. It runs middle-ground with those who insisted straight black or white, even. In any case, I'm pretty sure it's gonna look good.

'None of the Above' did run a strong second in polling...

With the way my Red Newbaum's cloth bar tape faded, I'm going to come out and say you're going to get a white purple fade anyway

You can find that purple-white tape here: http://www.fubarbicycleproducts.com/...lebartape.aspx

In the color drop-down choose purple/wht fade.

Personally, I vote for whatever the OP's gut choice is. I pick tape for myself to enjoy, and don't care what other people's opinions are.

As advertised, pics upon installation of the 'none-of-the-above' final selection, the ultimately not too tacky bar tape, 'eggplant' purple Newbaum's cotton tape! Here goes:

Was going to snap some nicely-placed and naturally lit outdoor shots, but it's rainy in Montreal today, so indoor shots will have to suffice for the moment:

The whole bike, for effect:

And here's the bike back at home on the wall-mount rack (I mentioned that it's a rainy day here in Montreal, right?):

I think it works pretty well. I do like the grippiness of cotton tape - particularly in contrast to the faux-leather texture of the previous tape, which was extremely slippy more times than I would like in recent memory, every time a little sweat made it down there. I admit the old tape did look good, aside from the gouging at the ends of the bars, and the fact that it had big gaps in the wrap above the hoods. Given the above, it did have to go, though. I think it was quite likely the same brand as that posted (in red/white rather than white/black) by eja_bottechia.

This looks good, too. Decent colour match, and I don't mind if it fades a bit (as someone mentioned this tape is wont to do).

Not as outlandish as splash, or even a fade, but still a little something other than the solid black/white stanbys - to best suit the 1990 ensemble, including the purple Specialized computer unit!

Outdoor pics for maximum effect to come, or perhaps I'll just post up a couple in 'Where did you ride today' when the weather clears...

It is. I bought a couple of these racks from a woodworking shop here in Montreal, called l'A.R.B.R.E.

I put up a post a couple weeks ago with a couple of pics of the racks.

Just moved into a new place here temporarily (for the next 6 months) and needed a quick fix; having spotted these in the window of the shop, I stopped in to enquire about them and walked out with the pair, made of laminated wood. These would certainly be easy to copy and make oneself, a simple and elegant design - but I'm not very handy with that kind of thing myself, and my girlfriend doesn't have access to the necessary tools at the moment

No amount of money would separate me from the dinosaurs...I don't think...Lol.

As for the Paramount tape, I haven't decided. I have some chartreuse stuff I may let go of.

Both carnivores and herbivores, it seems - some more safety-conscious than others.

Now that would have been a striking solution .

Personally, I like the Splash Tape, and I am sad that it is now really hard to find in the U.S.

But I have a question:

Can a bike forum member living in the United States please tell me if they possess or carry the Black and Purple, or Blue and Purple splash tape that they are willing to sell?

I am willing to make a good offer for it.

Thank you
