Unknown trackframe

Hi Everyone.

I have just bought an old track frame from my local velodrome. Do anybody know what brand this frame is? It might be a local builder, so this could be why I have such a hard time getting it right? Any suggestions?

That BB shell is interesting. Where do you live, Scandanavia? Post this in the Classic and Vintage subforum: http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdispl...ic-amp-Vintage

I live in Denmark. And I was i doubt where to put the post.

Thanks!

Moving to C&V from SSFG.

A photo of the frame as a whole might help.

Also, let's see the rear track ends and fork drop outs.

Maybe a Paris Sport track frame?

Paris Sport, being based in New Jersey (though most of their bikes were imported from France) would seem unlikely for a bike in Denmark. Not impossible, of course.

The BB shell is a Roto (I believe) and you can see it's marked made in Italy. The forkcrown also has a mark (AV?) but don't know what that means, brand-wise...wonder if the (French!) 531 decal is truthful or false...I'd look into the base of the steerer for "rifling", also tell us the seat post size and the BB threading.

Roto bb, indeed, the lugs, colour and lining were popular on Gazelle's too, they made quite a lot of those as well and would have been easy to export to denmark too.

And Italuminium, I just looked up gazelle track frames on google, and that looks very much like mine, but as you can see there is no "gazelle" in graving on the BB shell..

might not be a Gazelle, but it sure has a "Benelux" feel to it...that's a true track fork: are the blades round or oval (cross-section)?

FWIW, that's a "Roto" shell, from Italy.

What's the threading?

lasseklokker 07-10-12 01:29 AM

The blades are oval, not much, but just a little bit, and I do not know what cross-section refers to? And to JohnDThompson, I do not know how to check the treading of the BB, and I don't have the tools to take it apart.. I got it with the crank installed. (If there's an other way to check it, let me know..)

Yes, the lack of engraving is suspicious, any serial numbers? Bear in mind that many Dutch builders worked on and off at the gazelle racing dept. (at one time as much as 35 at a time), and many builders made off with the Gazelle stock building under their own name.

Threading is often stamped on the cups themselves, e.g. 1.37" x 24 (English), 35 x 1 (French), or 36 x 24 (Italian).

"Cross section" refers to how the blades would look if you sawed them off right below the crown. Round blades are typically found on track bikes. Oval blades were found on road bikes, and exist in two major profiles: "Imperial" (narrow) and "Continental" (wider):

One way to check the threading is clean up the bottom bracket, there should be some markings on it.
35 x 1 25.4tpi for french
1.370x 24 for British
36 x 24 for Italian.

There are also some oddball sizes, Swiss which is same size as French but threads differently.

I would guess my cross-section is imperial oval, but I am quit sure that it is a genuine track frame? And my BB is campagnolo and says 35x1. So that is what? French threading?

ColonelJLloyd 07-11-12 04:11 PM

It is, yes. That makes sense considering the decals.

lasseklokker 07-27-12 02:27 PM

And that just still leaves me puzzled. The best so far, must be the Gazelle suggestion, but it might turn out to be build locally. Thank you so far, for your great contributions! And sorry for the late answer, I have been away on holiday.

TimmyT 07-27-12 02:46 PM

Weird. I've got a similar bike that I have not been able to identify: triple windowed head lug, full 531, scalloped seat stays, Campagnolo dropouts, oval fork stays, windowed spearpoint lugs on the inside of the fork, same fork crown. The only thing that I know is that it must be late 70s, early 80s based on the parts hanging on it.

The only thing that is obviously different is the seat tube lug. I'm pretty sure mine is not pointed.

As for my bottom bracket, it was damaged at some time: an oaf brazed crappy looking steel reinforcements on it. I'm imagining that the bb shell was a drilled version of yours.

Nice bike, whatever it is.
