searching for new hubs

Hi folks!

I am currently looking for a new pair of freewheel hubs since I'm getting new wheels. My Peugeot' spacing is 96mm front and 124mm(!) back. I've tried eBay and even though I get up a lot of choices I'm not really sure what to go for. So if you guys could give me some input I sure would appreciate it!

Condition ought to be the first consideration - and there are many good choices out there, but given that it's a Peugeot, I would probably opt for something French. .

If I wasn't stuck on French, I might look at hubs from Suzue or Sunshine, or a low cost Italian like Gipiemme. (Low compared to Campy cost that is).

Is it a mid to late 80's "Nice" or similar?

OK. but the hubs in the Ebay listing are French threaded, which means that no freewheel made in the last 30 years is going to fit on the the rear. More precisely, they will thread on, but the first time you really hump on the pedals the freewheel will shear off the hub threads, leaving you pitched over the handlebars.

Careful: a good percentage of "vintage" freewheel hubs being sold on Ebay are similarly threaded, which means that they are basically useless for constructing wheels, unless you want a show bike for display-only purposes. If you are building wheels you want ISO threaded hubs.

Another consideration is that old freewheels, such as Atom, Normandy, Regina, Everest, Campagnolo etc. have primitive cog profiles, and shift no where near as well as a current $15 Shimano Hyperglide freewheel that you can find at any shop on the planet. Match this recent freewheel with a modern 7/8 speed chain and it shifts really well.

My personal preference for freewheel hubs: 7-speed Dura-Ace followed closely by Mavic and Superbe Pro and Sprint. Campagnolo Record is right up there as well, but the funny axle threading leaves you somewhat stranded if you break one.

Skip the 96 and 124mm part.

Look for 10mm front and 126mm rear. Any low flange hub should directly lace into your current rims/spokes as long as your current hubs are low flange.

If you want French hubs look for Maillard or Normandy, otherwise just look for a quality hubset at a price your comfortable with.

I see a lot of you talking about vintage hubs is that because it keeps the integrity intact? What about factory new hubs? I need a 32 spoked hub in a price range of $50-$80. Even though the frame is from around '84, I thought that I would update it with new components...

Oops! I missed that little detail. I think a lot of those hubs from foreign sellers could well be French threads, but domestically I have only ever encountered one Normandy hub like that.

Peugeot made a bike that had the model name "Nice". Just like Peugeot having a "Bordeaux" model.
