Cannondale on Craigslist.... there are still nice people & GREAT deals......

This past Saturday morning I spotted a mid to late 80's white Cannondale Criterium frame & fork on Craiglist Long Island. It was only an hour old ad, and the ridiculous price was $25. It had the headset, front derailleur, bottom bracket, neck and seat post still attached. A bit to small for me, I still figured it was a typo and the person meant $125 and it was going to be a project for me.

So, of course I contacted him immediately...and he responded immediately with his phone number. When I called him, he said there were a few chips and scratches on the bike, but it was solid. He was the original owner, and looking to clear some items out. He didn't want to go through the hassle of ebay like he use to. He said he also had the wheels to it, and when I offered more money for it he said just take them. He even agreed to meet me half way late that afternoon, as he was going to his cousins. He only lives about a half hour from me, but said it would be easier. When I did meet him, he also pulls out a bag with the brakes, levers, rear derailleur and crankset. He said he was happy someone was going to use it, but said he couldn't find the handlebars & pedals (!!!! who cares!!!). He didn't want more money, but I gave him 2 twenty dollar bills anyway.

Bike is in in the process of being cleaned up. The greasy parts are cleaning up nicely, and I can't wait to finish it. So see, there are still some great deals to be had and nice people do deal with on Craigslist.

It's usually pretty easy to tell if it's stolen. People throw out vintage bikes all the time or ask for some nominal payment. I'll only take vintage stuff if it's free or virtually so and I can tell you with some certainty that I've never received a stolen bike or parts. I don't see anything in the OP's post that would raise flags - he just sounds lucky. Anyway, nice score, Oldbikenewbike!

awesome !! i agree, i run into good dealings with CL more then bad, i just met a nice fellow from the local college here that bought my Olympian, he was so excited about it, he also will be buying another bike for his father from me (wally world mtn bike) but he was extremely happy and an honest kid...

plus he didn't haggle, and he had great communication
