No helmets, tennis shorts, shoes and shirts - and JC Penney-branded 10 speeds. Oh, yeah - those were the days

I wonder how long it took for one of the wheels to rust up after that dip into the ocean?

Classic

Dunno, but I bet it was measured in "lids" back in '75

What a great year! I was riding my Sears Free Spirit Puch at the time. I didn't have one of those heavy disk brakes.

Those are heavy duty disk brakes...wow. Obviously like air bags in a Cadillac, they were a bit before their time.

Wow that must of been brutal. I can't imagine cross country touring on a dedicated touring rig but let alone one of those heaps. lol. This is about four years before my time...on earth.

Ah the seventies. You could buy a six pack of tube socks for a $1.99, your white clothes stayed forever white, kaleidoscope transition film fades were all the vogue, and ethnic groups were repped by a single token member. Such memories.

Thanks for sharing, I was in college then. Can only imagine riding those POS bikes across the country. I think I would have tossed mine into the Pacific at the end.

Thanks for posting! Beautifully done, and a real classic! Look beyond what we now consider to be POS bikes and you will see a great experience nicely captured on film. Again, beautifully done! A feather in JC Penny's cap!

Didn't know that one... Had to look it up!

As far as the video, it's hokey but it was the 70's and most of these types of films were just as hokey.

Didn't Popular Mechanics do a story in the 70s where a group of people ordered mail-order bicycles and took them on a cross country (I think north to south) tour? As I recall none of them had any real problem with the bikes, until just after the tour when one bike suffered several broken spokes.

For the Popular Mechanics fans out there...there are bicycle related articles in the back issues ....
