Both versions appear to have the same tread. I like the Continental Gatorskin or Ultra Sport slicks, but they are wire bead, slick for smooth rolling on pavement, and not available wider than 1 1/4". The Loose Screws tires look potentially interesting for people looking for a folding touring tire and/or for a slightly wider tire, with enough tread for mixed paved/unpaved riding. I'd be interested in reports from anyone who tries these. I have no affiliation with or interest in Loose Screws, but I have several bikes with 27" wheels. |

Score. Thank you for the heads up. I've kind of daydreamed about a non-knobby 1 3/8" tire since getting a wheelset with a Specialized 27 x 1 3/8" Expedition tire. I had no inclination to go any more than 5-10 miles from home on those 30+ year old tires, but they felt nice. @The Golden Boy: I also acquired a bike with the same 30+ year-old Specialized Touring tires. I was more willing to ride 'em. After a few months the sidewalls split and the tube started creeping out the side. Fortunately, I noticed before it blew at a bad time. Now I haven't been riding that bike since it needs new tires. I think you're wise not to push your luck with those.

$27 for a 27 x 1 1/4 folding tire. No idea who actually makes it, but there are few folding 27s, so I figured it'd be a good option for some around here. I have 2 on a bike and just picked up and extra that I will bring along when out riding for multiple days. They ride fine- nothing impressive but also nothing to cry about. |
As far as actual width is concerned, it's not so much what is printed on the sidewall but what the actual inflated width is on any particular rim.
Those old Expedition tires were no bigger than a 1-1/4" Pasela, or 1-1/4" World Tour, or 1-3/8" folding Hi-Lite Tour, all are about 32mm upon initial inflation. Some 1-3/8" tires such as Kenda Cross-Cyclo, Club Roost or Cheng Shin actually measure less than 32mm, more like 30mm, but still are wider than most tires marked 1-1/4" since these can be as narrow as 27mm on a 22mm rim! Like a lot of poorly-standardized bicycle parts, such as bottom bracket spindles and even quill stem extension lengths, it is up to the end user to actually measure (and perhaps even test-install and/or test-ride) things if they want to achieve precise results relating to things like crank chainline, bike/rider fit and tire clearance. |

The Chen Shin 27 x 1 3/8 knobbies are a good value. I see them lasting a long time as commuter tires, though they do not fold. They prob retail for $12 max.

I can't remember ever seeing a ChengShin knobby in 27", but perhaps likely Cheng does make the 1-3/8" ClubRoost "inverted"-style knobby? I've used the Kenda Knobby on the back wheel of my Miyata SixTen tourer. It rode and wore reasonably well but blew out in the center of the tread for unknown reason when the tread was about 2/3 worn. I haven't been completely the same since I stopped riding on the Specialized Expedition 1 3/8 tire...I can't find a smooth replacement.

One thing I really enjoy about C&V is the industry vets. I just tried to fit one of these. The Nashbar reviews said it fit really tight. Man, it's no fooling! I marred up the rim and pinched the tube in the process. I might try it tubeless just to offend the maximum number of purists on every side.
