Also a little info on a Pre-war Raleigh Record Ace. It sold on our local CL earlier this year, I missed it by less than an hour! Anyway it ended up at the LBS for some work...... very light 21" frame weighed something like 24lbs but they side the frame was very whippy. I understand it ended up at Via cycles....don't know if it's for sale, on display or if it's even still there....just in case someone is hunting down a classic

hey, I know the thread is a bit old, but I just put drops on my IGH. (nexus 7) The J-tek shifter works a lot better on the drops than it does on the bullhorns I had previously. I am still tweaking the fit of the drops, but so far the bikes rides much better with the original drops than it did with the more modern bullhorns I had on it. Looks much better too.

The thread isn't too old. This is the C&V section with old stuff, isn't it. And is that matching leather bar wrap to go with a nice leather seat? Either way, I agree, it looks good with the drops. How do you like the hub gearing/gear-spacing? I was thinking of maybe buying a newer hub with more gears if I decide I like it with the 3 speed.

So many of you have such nice bikes in this style. I'm starting to worry that I'm gonna end up spending a lot more on this bike than I planned for a 7+ geared hub and leather seat and bar wrap. Then after that I'll be watching for a nice tubular wheel-set. Then... This might be a problem if I decide I like the IGH road bike.

Seriously, lots of nice chrome, paint and drops displayed in this thread, but on an old 3spd, patina rules IMHO. rhm, with the only mechanicals cleaned and greased; keeping the ratty bar tape and stained fenders....this would be one "way cool" Beater!

Yeah, well, I cleaned it up. 700c wheels with a correct 1951 FM hub (so it's not a three speed any more), nearly correct dynamo in front, and it's mechanically sound (always a plus!).

In the mean time it has changed again; Neal gave me a headlamp that says "Lenton" on it, so I switched those. And I found an exact replacement for the original crank (which was bent). New photos are needed!

Not really. It is Deda Elementi "leather" tape. I think "leather" refers to the color, as it is in no way leather.

Well, I love it, but I am coming from a single speed so I may not have the most informed opinion on gearing. I might like it to have larger jumps between gears, as I am often switching up two or three gears at once. I think a five speed with 400% gear range would suit me best. I think the nexus 7 is 270%, and I am mostly on the top, bottom, or very middle gears. Maybe I should switch to three chainrings and a single cog?? Nah, I like the IGH. Shifting at a stop and the clean lines of a missing derailer are, in fact, the bees knees. The nexus 7 is very smooth and quiet. The perfect balance between fixed gear heaven, and touring bike versatility. The hub is a little hesitant to shift if you have pressure on it, but not a huge problem. I compare that to my car's transmission, which would, of course, completely bust if I tried to shift under power without a clutch. (new idea: twist grip clutch for IGH like on motorbikes) I think the hub is light enough. I am 230lbs, so suffice it to say, I am not worried about weight saving coming from the bike. I also have a huge 38c Armadillo tire on the rear, which seems to add a bunch of weight, and the rim seems to be made of lead. However, it all makes for a nice cush ride.

Do it! peer pressure: Its hard to find someone on a bike forum opposed to spending more money on a bike. But I can say that IGH road bike is not a contradiction, rather it is a very nice thing indeed.

My 1979 Ross Compact 3 speed converted to drop bars. It is way too small for me, but I want to build a bigger one as it is a good riding experience.








Here is another one that I saw. It is a Sprinter that is made in Germany.

2012 Windsor TimeLine from BikesDirect that I had my local shop convert to three speeds with a Sturmey-Archer SRF3. Such a fun bike to ride! It’s running 46x18, so 52/69/92 GI. It’s ideal for NYC.

I put sturmey archer aw hubs on many kinds of bikes. I don't however run drop bars anymore. My neck can't take it. However the bikes that get the aw hubs used to have drop bars. 73super course.

'72, or thereabouts, Humber. Was set up originally like a Sprite 5, and has gone through a number of build variations, but I like it this way the best.

I do remember looking through this thread over a decade ago and thinking, "I'll never build one of those--- (because I was living in the NH mountains and a SA-AW just can't make the grade)!

Fast forward, and here I am, the end of 2022, living on a pancake flat coastal island, converting a 1975 Schwinn Voyageur II into a 3-speed utilizing a 1951 SA-AM hub! Go figure!

Still, lots of work to do!

Yes - some riders who tend to push harder and are more particular about cadence will like the AM medium ratio. If you have to have it even closer together, the rarely-seen AC close-ratio hub is another option. Another possibility is the FM four-speed medium ratio, which has fairly tight gearing but an extra speed.
