1968 French Bike

I wonder if anyone can identify this bike. The photos were taken in France in 1968 and the bike was probably new then. It looks like a 5 speed, but that's all I can tell. Are there any French bike experts?

I can't afford the campaign contribution needed to get his attention.

I think you nailed it. Not to many details to see, but the curve of the front wheel opening is correct.

Somewhere, my dad nods in approval

Back to the bikes: They look to be nice specimens of the French "sport" category. Stronglight Model 57 Super Competition crank on Mittens' bike would make it expensive in its day.

Not surprising he isn't riding a cheap bike. Looks like a relaxed geometry, at least his friends bike has a lot of trail in the fork. I haven't seen trail on the front fork like that since a dutch Pegasus bike I had in the early '80s.

Yeah, French "sport" equals sports tourers and were generally much more relaxed than competition bikes. Look at the Peugeot PX 8 in the middle for a similar bike to Romney's:

Interestingly the crank on Romney's bike (which is the only feature I can identify) was discontinued in 1963 so maybe his bike is older than that. That crank is almost always configured as a double according to www.classiclightweights.co.uk so it's interesting to see it set up as a single. Most sport tourers at the time had steel cottered cranks like Stronglight 54 or 55.

Romney's crank can also have been a late fifties-early sixties model 49D, which had the star as part of the chainring instead of being part of the drive arm:

27" wheels, wingnuts on both wheels, dynamo lights with headlight mounted on the fender. I can't tell what are his derailer, I'm throwing out a guess at a Huret Svelto.

His friend's bike has a front centerpull brake, also the headtube is in a white contrasting color.
