I got my first C&V bikes in 1984 and 85. They were a AD Puch Maxima 15 and a Trek 300 Elance. They were not C&V at the time.

It was not C&V then but in May of 87 a Bianchi Sport SX. It is questionable wether it is a C&V today but I refer to most of my bikes as Nuovo Classic
Here she is today, or rather last year after an overhaul and mini resto.

Of the bikes I have now, I bought my 75 Eisentraut in 1976 from Hendrickson's Bike Shop in downtown Santa Barbara, CA. I was a budding USCF Cat 4 racer at the time and had crashed my Peugeot PR10 out of existance, so I wanted an upgrade. The Eisentraut has been repainted twice and had several different groups of components over the years. When it became difficult to get parts for it I began searching here at C&V and the rest is history.

OK. I bought a PX-10 in 1971, but it wasn't Classic & Vintage when I bought it. But we'll let this sucker roll.
BTW, I bought that orange bike on the left in 1985, as I remember. Was barely C&V then.

1973 - a '73 Gitane Interclub from Mel Pinto Imports - I stupidly went with clinchers
sold it to my brother around 1983
Now, when did I acquire my first bike that was already C&V? - I guess I could count my '84 Trek 760 bot in 2004. It was 20 y/o by then, still friction shift and non-aero levers.

+1 I bought a new 1974 Peugeot UO8, after my 1970 Schwinn Continental got stolen the first week of college. Oh yeah, neither were C & V back then.

I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of you, my first C&V wasn't a C&V when I got it. But at the time it was the newest high end bike I could buy. Early 80's Pinarello track bike and my dad bought the Pogliaghi track bike, we had some great times on them at the Colorado Springs velodrome! Still love riding both of them.

Early 1970s I had a paper route.
Bought a Batavus Tour D' Europe with profits!
Was stolen two days after I bought it, never to return.
My parents homeowners covered it and I started over with about $80.
Our Italian neighbors had several bicycles they brought from Italy.
One of which was a green Legnano.
They never touched those bicycles in their garage and one day I offered them $50.
Sold!!!!
God only knows where that poor thing ended up.

I got my cardinelli, cardinalli whatever it was in the 79-80.
it was an apartment complex find, I repainted it, alloy rims, alloy cranks, and really spruced it up.
what was left of the original was the frameset,BB,and campy deraileurs-all else was upgraded.
this time peroid of bikes had a lasting effect on me,
in 2008 I believe I bought my first PUCH 1984ish

In 1971, my parents wouldn't spring for the campy equipped bikes so I ended up with an Orbea OCI with steel rims, Zeus Alpha gears, half step steel chainring, and a corncob block. That bike was so exotic to me and is one of the reasons I'm still obsessing with bikes today.

Is this a trick question? When I got my Gran Sport in 1973, it wasn't a C&V bike, it was just a bike.
[edit] OK I actually read the thread, and see I'm not the first to make this point.

Could you define your question? Do you mean when we first buy a used bike that was more than X years old? And what is X?

As others have noted, I rode C & V bikes in the 70s before they were classic. Then I took 35 years or so off. Came back last fall and after a week or two on a Ross mountain bike, I bought an early 90s (I think) Bianchi Advantage (retrofitted with road bars). Old, but not quite C & V.
After putting 1,000 miles on that, I wanted to upgrade. Sort of wanted an old Raleigh as that's what I rode as a kid and was fortunate to find what turned out to be an 81 Team Pro. An SBDU bike w/ a Reynolds 753 frame. Couldn't have dreamed of a more appropriate find for me.

May 1976: a Sears Free Spirit, Bicentennial edition, steel lugged beauty. Sold to a local girl.
May 1987, a 1984 Trek 510, black, lugged, Suntour. Traded for a CD player and 100 CD's.
May 1991, a 198? Raleigh Technium, also Suntour. A very nasty spill ended it's life.
May, 2008, a 1988 Centurion Dave Scott Ironman Master.
The 20-year gap sort of makes it my first C&V.

1985, sky blue Vitus. (I no longer have it, but I'd like to find another one just like it.)

No one cares
i commuted to work on weekend at a diner on my dads 60's Raleigh in the late 80's/early 90's. I guess that would be my first. I didn't "get in" to the hobby of riding/restoring until early 2008.

I was home on leave from the Army Christmas 1988 and when I saw her still hanging from the ceiling, my scalp got all tingly/icy and I grabbed the glass counter because I just about fainted.
I was so happy because this Masi was my dream bike for 3 years while I was a USCF junior, bagging groceries at *#^&%$ Albertson's Market, making $4.35/hr. My Army paycheck as a PFC was meager, but it still sufficed and it was like marrying my highschool sweetheart!
I later learned that it was made right here in Carlsbad where I live now, in 1984. Which means she hung up in that shop in Brea, CA for FOUR years waiting for me.
She was my racer and primary transportation during the 3 happy years when I was stationed in Brunssum, the NL, just a stone's-throw from the German & Belgian borders down in Holland's "Little Switzerland." Masis were pretty uncommon in Europe, since they were being built in CA and the old Dutch and Belgians would gather around, and sometimes their eyes would get a little shiny. I think I could probably part with one of my thumbs before I could part with this Masi.

If you mean steel-framed roadie with old school gears it was in -83. A "rossi" coloured Crescent 318 with 600 arabesque. At that time, it was pretty cool. But If you mean how how it all started...
