My little 8 year old girl to conquer 90km/55miles ride saturday...we will see!

One local bicycle club is arranging a 90 km ride saturday, start at 8am from our town of Järvenpää to town of Porvoo.

map link here

Me and Nelli have been riding all summer up to 30kms per day and this will be her biggest ride.
school starts next week-so she will have a tale to tell!

the organizer emailed me and said this is not for children-
I had a little discussion with him, I said how many 8 year olds have a pair of 9kg/20 pound campy equipped roadbikes with tubular tires?!?!

He eventually said "bring her on, but those who fall behind get left behind"

Nelli's mother will be oncall with the van to come fetch us if Nelli gives up.

She will be on her Han Lutz, and I will be riding my newly restored PUCH.

wish us Luck!

Why don't you two ride the course without the group ride? That way if she wants to stop and smell the roses she can.

my girl is all muscle, if she puts her mind to it we will be just fine.

now I could take my red heavier Puch with a small rack with a few snacks and clothes...or my just finished 9.4 kg Puch Ultima which I am dieing to take out for a proper ride.

we are in a way seperate from the group-if Nelli cant keep up or gives up we have a sweeper.

My daughter did a ride about that long when she was that age, so I guess that was five years ago. Anyway, I told her it was 35 miles (I was wrong). She liked it. And that was on a three speed. I think you'll do fine. No need to stay with the group, though, if they want to go faster (they probably will).

If she is game, go, but do get her an extra water bottle and some toe clips, she might be not ready for straps but clips will go a long way to keeping her feet where they belong on the pedal, did that for my son and it was a great help.

You never know what your limits are until you test them. Kudos to you for giving your girl a chance to test her strength and heart.

funny you mention-a new set of plastic clips with the top cut off went on just yesterday!

the trip is divided in 2 legs, there and back with a good lunch when we get there and plenty of time to rest
I will consider putting on a second bottle for this trip but I think we will be ok.

forecast is: partly cloudy and 17C/62F

I need to take a used 24" tubey off the other bike just in-case,
she is riding on some pretty bald vittoria's currently
4 new ones are in the post and I doubt they will arrive tomarrow.

seriously- what is a good powerful breakfast for us?
have to get some powerbars also.

In 1979 my brother rode SAAGBRAW (week long ride across Wisconsin) when he was 6, on a girls frame Sears 20 inch bike with a three speed hub. It wasn't until the next year that he got a baby Gitane to ride.

I rode in '78 when I was 10 on an old Peugeot.

She'll do great! Lot's of encouragement from Wisconsin.

Don't worry, if you can't keep up with her I'm sure she'll understand.

You'll be fine. All she needs is the desire to finish & it will happen...Way to go! Also: hydration...hydration...hydration.

Mike: How tall is Nelli...? For 8 years old, she looks tall.

What my nutritionist might say would go like this:

Stay away from processed sugar or high fruits corn syrup or its also known as, corn sugar...
Sugar gets the blood sugar up fast but then you can bonk.
Complex carbos and protein.

I'd love to do this with my 9 y.o. daughter. I've got a 24" roadie waiting to be fixed up in the garage for her. Let us know how you both do- I'll be telling my daughter about yours to encourage her with riding (she's a little intimidated by the bike).
