Project Varsity
so i bought this crusty schwinn varsity last week $20, couldn't pass it up. i wasn't sure about what i was going to do with it until now.
today i was looking on CL for something smaller to replace my SS 57cm when i saw this ad for motors you put on bikes. i checked out the web site, watched a ton of videos and thought it looked like fun so what the hell.
https://sa1754.wix.com/motovelo?PageS...cID=21913832#!
i plan on stripping the bike, making it rideable, fresh paint and maybe decals or pinstriping. then mounting a motor on it. it's going to be a fun project.

I hate those 2-stroke-cycle motors, which emit more noise and smog than most cars and trucks out there.

I suggest going a different route. Take the time and clean it up, but don't put on the motor. A Varsity may be a very heavy frame, but they seem to be bullet-proof and make great city bikes to pedal around on.

I didn't buy this bike with a resto in mind. I already have other bikes I enjoy cruising around on.

incazzare.
Maybe so, but there are so few of them that it doesn't really matter.

Finally got it apart. Going to need a new headset, kind of mangled the old one getting it off. Now it's time to get it sand blasted. If anyone wants any of the parts I took off I will gladly give them to you just pay shipping.

finally got it partially pieced together. don't think i'll be using the mtb wheels. i would like a to use a fat set of tires with this bike to get a larger contact patch with the road but the 26in wheels are to small and the largest tire you can get on a 27in is 1 3/8.

At least the Varsity started out with a very high bottom bracket, so as long as you can get some brakes on there, a smaller wheels size maight actually be practical.
The bike is looking great!

The bike looks great, can't wait to see how well it does with a motor. Might try this myself if you pull it off.

A beach cruiser rear wheel with a coaster brake makes for a fun varsity, since you've got tires and a front wheel already. I've built up several old schwinns this way.

What? You spray painted the frame? You'll never get that lovely patina back.
Great project.
