My Varsity is cool?

This is a bike I recently built up as a "show and tell" project on the ratrodbike forums. It ended up being a fun neighborhood cruiser and I've been riding it ever since it was completed. Tonight two teenage girls told me that my bike was cool and they really liked the color. A mile up the road I was stopped by a fellow that runs an antique shop. He wants to buy it if I ever decide to sell. Who would have thought that a Varsity would get anybody's attention ever again?

That is cool - Can't think of the last time a Varsity reached out and grabbed me.

He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Sell it and buy something better to ride. The 3 piece crank is a good addition, but Varsity forks don't add a thing to the riding experience. If you ever exceed 10mph, get a better bike, IMO.

That being said, you did a great job on yours, and I love the color, I think a black sadle/grips would look better, but that's my taste. White, even better still.

Great color and terrific job in building it up. Nice way to keep a classic 60's era Schwinn on the road.

I have plenty of bikes here so finding something better won't be a problem...
This thing is fun and a nice departure from lightweight stuff and mountain bikes.

It started off as a low cost build and I used what I had laying around. That's where the saddle and grips came from. It might end up with a honey Brooks B-17 and cork grips later on.

It's actually a deep purple colored glass reflector. I did put a real blue dot in the tailight. It glows a nice purple hue in the dark.

you say two teenaged girls on the street told you it's cool? AND the antique store owner wants to buy it? You don't need us, you got all the proof you want.

And I disagree with OFG on selling it for something better. I think everyone should have a classic Varsity in their collection -- and where would you find another one like that?

What a beauty! I'm having guilt pangs over memories of sailing one down a hill without a rider, another time into a lake, over curbs, down rutted trails in the middle of the night, left out in the rain and snow. Now I want a Varisty too! I promise I'll treat her better this time!

That's a pretty early color scheme, isn't it? Cool.
I've got a Sunset Orange Conti in the basement that I can't wait to get up and running.

I'd love to have a Schwinn in violet, even a Varisty. What I would really like is a violet Paramount.

Well done! The lights, reflectors, the upgrades, all turn a classic mid 60s Varsity into a one of a kind creation. Do you have a front fender to match the rear? That would add to the enhancements!

Just noticed the cable clamp just below the the F/D , that's a great idea. What clamp is it? I need to do the same thing on one of my projects.

That's just Schwinn violet. It was only used on Varsities in 65' and 66'. It looks like the lighter Flamingo in some of the pictures.

Thanks!!!

The rear fender is a "Chop Chort" fender from woodysfenders.com. It's sweet and I may check into having a shorty front fender made up to match.

It's a Sturmey-Archer top tube clamp from an old three speed.

You can't hurt a Varsity by doing all this! That's how you break them in ...

I may ruin my Varsity.... I'm contemplating replacing the steel wheels with an aluminum wheelset

By the way... you should submit yours to the Old Ten Speed Gallery.
