Trek 6000 project
Hey all, I recently picked up what I believe is a 1991 Trek 6000 at the local bike kitchen.
As it was when I first saw it. http://i.imgur.com/EVix3.jpg http://i.imgur.com/X41pT.jpg I removed the cheap-o wheels, bars, seat, rd, and shifter. http://i.imgur.com/saFri.jpg Next thing to do is to remove the rattle-can (disguise) paint job on half the frame/fork. http://i.imgur.com/twtjX.jpg http://i.imgur.com/17oCM.jpg To remove the paint I tested out using Zep 45 http://i.imgur.com/jrpBr.jpg my dad tried brake cleaner on the chainstays http://i.imgur.com/Owvtp.jpg and gasoline on the seatstays http://i.imgur.com/ppIgD.jpg Brake cleaner works the best, so we'll work with that once we return from our trip. We'll probably have to get creative with the decals, though, so we don't lose them. http://i.imgur.com/xcOvT.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dx1X0.jpg |
Rivets everywhere.

Nice find! Good luck salvaging the finish. You might also want to try graffiti remover, takes off the spray paint and retain the old layer of paint.
I picked up a 91 Trek 8000 recently off CL, essentially the same frame, different components. It's a very light frame and uniquely constructed. Too bad it is too big for me. You don't see these early aluminum Treks too often here. Be sure to post your finished Trek in our Vintage mountain bikes thread! BTW, if you don't have a use for that rigid Trek fork, PM me. I have an old Trek 930 steel mtb about the same size that's missing its steel fork. |
That was my wife's first mountain bike. She loved it.
