Shimano Z Series

Any history or information on the Z series Shimano parts? Are they friction or indexed?

Friction.

There were Z-series freewheels (e.g. MF-Z012) that are SIS compatible; they have "INDEX" stamped on the cogs next to the tooth number.

There is some good information on Velobase about them. They were used on entry/mid-level eighties bikes.

Nice info, thanks for the link. I inhereted a set and was going to give them to a good friend for a vintage project. They look just like Deer Head XT derailleurs. So, I wasn't sure whether they were friction or indexed.
