Collection Intervention?
I'm starting a separate thread on this EBAY listing. It should get interesting. :)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/320973544308...84.m1423.l2649 |
Tall guys are cheap, no bids will happen on ebay. The collection does not appear to have caught much dust, but they need an air pump, maybe a compressor, I think I would get tired after the 5th bike.
Now, if those bikes were 55-56 cm center to top... a much different story. A profit could be made. |
I don't see anything in there worth a thousand bucks on its own. Half that price would be appropriate, and they'd be lucky to get a quarter from the bike shop that might be interested.
|
Joe Englert lives up in that part of California and buys everything. :p Hey Joe, whaddayuh think?
|
I'll repost what I wrote on the eBay thread:
So at $23,000 for 29 bikes, we're talking around $800/bike. If I'm buying a large number of bikes, I'm expecting a rather large discount over buying them individually...at least half off and maybe more. The market and demand is limited by people who can afford it, can facilitate transfer and who can store them. To me that means that the average bike has to be worth $1,600. Too many of these are $500 bikes (and lower) for this kind of asking price. Also note the large sizes. I don't think he's getting that price separately. I'm not sure he's getting half of that price separately. There's hi-ten in htere...Shimano 600 and lower...no way these are $800 median value. Personally, I'd be willing to go around $4,000 for the lot. |
At an average of $793 a bike to get to the bidding started, regardless of the frame size, I'd be surprised if it goes anywhere. The collection doesn't seem to justify the price...to me anyway...and there my size. I'll go crawl back under my rock now.
( What Aaron said, he types faster) |
This is for local pickup. Other than putting them each in their own secure stand in a container and having a long-haul truck service tow it to you, how else would you safely ship a collection of this magnitude?
|
This reminded me to keep putting different size bikes into my collection.

No - I'm not being controversial...I haven't done exact math here, but at a glance, I'm seeing an average value of around $500/bike, if not less - and I'd want to pay around a third of that for a bulk buy. Consider the difficulty and cost in moving and storing them...selling one by one...the ads. Maybe you could get me to $5,000. Maybe.
FYI - shipping is a cost the buyer will bare. If he put these on eBay at $5,000, I'm not sure he'd get a buyer. The demand for this many bikes, in that size, is quite limited. I'm frankly unimpressed with most of this collection...I think I have half as many bikes and that what I own is worth considerably more. I wouldn't expect that amount of money on a mass sale...for fewer bikes. Quality over quantity - this is quantity. |

Maybe, I'm not so sure. I think you're over valuing what's there and not taking size into account. I usually knock off a third of a bike's value for that kind of size, plus I'll be sitting on it longer. There aren't many people who can pick up and store 29 bikes and with $5,000 to pay (plus shipping and storage costs).

I think that qualifies... |
There're a few gems in there. To get $23K on the street most would have to be parted out. If I lived local to him I bet I could make a 25% profit on a $15K offer.

Rough estimates after paying fees for eBay/paypal, also factoring in costs of claims/returns...not counting any replacement costs, labor, storage/shipping fees. Keep in mind he has limited photros and descriptions, so I have to skew a bit down and/or guess.

The Cinelli with Anniversary is the best of the bunch. |

25% profit with a $15,000 investment doesn't seem too great a return for the work involved.

I see there is a buy-it-now , better jump o this quick guys

As a buyer none of that matters to you....
Better than I thought - I have my rough estimate on full on value at around $18,000 - or about $620/bike. I'd go $240/bike in bulk - or around $7,000. There are a few nice bikes in there...the Cinelli stands out...the Della Santa... |
Tall frames and long crank arms will surely negatively affect the final price and number of bidders on that lot.
|
They're ALL too big for me, so I have no interest at all!
|
The bikes are around my size. Frankly, I think my collection is far more interesting and bought for far, far less. And therein lies the problem: any collector of vintage bikes is going to be interested in one or two of these bikes, not the entire lot, and is going to work this out discount wise in his/her head. Not much that grabs me here-- the Cinelli and the Masi are grail bikes to many, but the Della Santa might be the most interesting thing to me, maybe one of the Condors. I can't see this selling; the real price would probably need to be about 10-15000 to make it profitable for a flipper. Maybe lower, as us tall guys quickly learn that there's a substantial discount on taller frames.

Don't you think the idea is to not auction the collection, then sell privately (either as a whole or piece) after it expires?
I'd love to say how interested I would be in a couple of the individual bikes, as they're my size. But, one, old, Eddy Merckx SP bike is more than enough C&V collecting dust in the garage for me. |
