toe straps and sneakers? I need shoes!

I must admit, Ive been riding my PUCH with a new set of gray Vans,
them nice sexy laceup cycling shoes are dang hard to find-

is there an easy solution?

I want some new shoes that will fit my 45ish size feet
not to fond of velcro on my feet.

good substitutes?

no-Im not getting rid of my Campy S.R. TI pedals.

(I would love some winter goretex boots w/ velcro straps-but they are only made for children!)

I'll just list good luck - bad luck experiences with my campy record pedals/christophe toe clips/mks strap setup on the ALAN. YMMV.

The good:
Monkstrap dress shoes! - surprisingly nice. The leather sole is very good and flex is much less noticable then with sneakers, and the strap means no interference. Not very breathable though. The clips DO damage the front end of the shoe, so don't use your best pair. Maybe a cobbler can add stiff cycling soles to a used pair of dress shoes for a crazy stylish ride.

Specialized MTB shoes: Yes, ordinary road/mtb shoes will work with old style quill pedals, IMHO, stupid as it may soud. The stiffness of the sole prevents hot feet and cramps. the only disadvantage is that the stack height is much higher, so your saddle will feel a bit too low.

Onitsuka Tigers: nice sneakers, narrow, ok sole. Good for casual riding.

The bad:
converse all stars: Bad. the quill cuts a nasty furrow in my feet after 5 km.
Vans: better, but the clips interfere with the does due to the floppy top.

The ugly:
Clarks desert boots: As stylish as a rusty shovel and impossible to get in the straps. hot, sweaty and annoying. Plus, a fashion no go Had to use this combo once in an emergency when my riding shoes were wet.

Ever since I bought two pairs of nice old riding shoes with wooden soles (brand unknown) from a friendly fellow restorer for just 10 euro's I ride nothing else. good luck with your search for a proper fair anyway.

I use these:

Much stiffer soles than on my Samba and lighter to boot. Do you actually manage to get warm feet in Finland?

nice and cheap BIG SIZES

cant get a pic cause its javascript

I explained the situation to my LBS and he let me test on shoes to get a feel for what size fits me.
the shimano 45 was too tight, but the other brand was kinda ok, but the other brand 46 fit just perfect.

so I ordered a set of 46.
I will be sure to give a review on the forum

Yep, AdiRacers are the way to go. The sole is stiff from the arch back, but flexes in the front end. Comfortable walking and riding from my experience.

Why do they have to put that big Goodyear logo on the side? It gives it a NASCAR look.

I use Samba on my fixed gear with quill pedals... they're not comfortable for walking much, but they fit on the pedals just fine and I don't notice a problem with the sole stiffness... also, no Goodyear logo.

Yeah, Sambas have worked the best with quills for me. For a fashion forward approach I like the Bundeswehr Turnschuhe. This may indict me with some mild hipsterism.

I have some old Specilized laceup touring shoes. Very stiff soles and some versions could be converted to clipless by cutting out the rubber soles. Couldn't find anything at Google, YMMV.

Because they're driving shoes made to compete with companies like Piloti and Sparco?

Those are nice looking shoes, and the price seems pretty good too-- especially compared to other classic-type shoes. I take it they have lots of new pairs for sale, and you just order whatever size you need? That sounds perfect.

in the posting there is a box to state the size you want.

in the feedback box some people say they are very nice-why not?!?!?

Tigers have very flexy soles, but the uppers are super breathable. I wear them as everyday shoes and have a set of mks gr-9 platforms on my 'round town bike, which make that flexy sole no concern at all.

Because generic nylon toe straps are so floppy, I applied some Plasti-dip, hardware store stuff, for tool handles.
it gives them some substance, so they are stiffer, thus easier to stuff your foot into.

also replaces worn coating on cordura nylon bags.. pretty good.

platform pedals have a velcro strap scheme FS now, for the fixie crowd.
