Anyone in Amsterdam the 23rd?

If anyone is up for it: just a small gettogether of people enjoying C&V roadbikes. No serious distance is going to be done, just about 20km.

The idea is more a tribute to the old neighbourhood race called the Ronde van de Elandsgracht: an old race going round the canal of the Elandsgracht. Back in the days, everyone with a roadbike was able to compete. Licensed riders were not allowed, but often they did compete in secret. Past weeks I found out lots of stories of history and intrige about this race, talking to all the old Jordaneze (Jordaan is the borough).

At about 14.00 we ride out passing a couple of bars, where getting a stamp is mandatory and maybe have a nice drink. The start & finishline is at cafe l'Affiche, located at Jacob van Lennepstraat 39 in Amsterdam. An award will be given to someone, but for what is not clear yet.

If you're going to attend, let me know via the forums.

PS riding along is free, drinks unfortunately not...

Cheers, Don

What a great idea and what a great neighborhood. Take lots of pictures, or have someone take them for you!

Please take a picture of that too, if you'd be so kind. Love the Triumph Bonny. This ride sounds like great fun. I so wish I could go back to Amsterdam on short notice. For now, will have to experience this event vicariously. Looking forward to report, thanks.

Hmmm... that looks interesting Count me in, I think. Have to take a look in my agenda, but I am very committed to undergo the 'De ronde van de Elandsgracht' experience. Btw why 20km? The organising committee is more into drinking, elaborating etc than in cycling?

Great idea and I will join you for sure on one of my Zielemans probably

'The ronde van de Elandsgracht' was something I have watched a couple of times and have entered as a competitor once.

Actually it was a pretty tough tour because of the sharp 180 degrees turn every 800 meters which involved accelarating to full speed from an almost complete stop with a peloton consisting of not to experienced riders.

Great fun with friendly competition and at the end one of the organisors always appeared to have won.

Hope to see you Don

Haha you would think that and it may be true The idea is to make it more accessable for the locals. Most important is that a group of people have a great time, without excluding anyone not up for a long ride; creating some awareness about the cycling history of the neighbourhood. And of course showing off some nice bikes, which is easier at a watering hole than at full speed.

Anyway it's nothing to be taken all that serious but it would be really cool to see you there! Don't hesitate to bring others along with you.

You are more a part of this than I thought at first! I'm already wondering which bike you are going to bring.

See you there!

Christmas eve so in the middle of wrenching season... And, if the weather is anything like last year, at the start of the skating season!

I attended this event today. It was a very nice and cosy event. About 40 male and female riders attended. Various kind of riders, bit all with one thing in common: a passion for old bikes. Multiple backgrounds: some of the people belonged to Zieleman's inner circle and were bit by the bug, others just bought their first classic and saw the poster, retired fixie-riders and than folks like me, non-fixie and paulkal who are quite seriously into it for years now.

The entourage was well taken care of. Many pics were shot from an old Triumph motorcycle and an ancient CitroŽn Ami 8 was there sweep up stranded cyclists. 'Fortunately' there was only one unfortunate cyclist in the end: the Amsterdam park roads were too much a challenge for Paulkal's Continental Giro tubular. A flat. There was generous sportsdrink (beer) and sportfood (baquette cheese). We also got a sweet yellow-ish/pink-ish chemical substance, but I don't think it was doping. 'Spekkies' instead.

Many thanks to the organising committee and support troops. Chapeau.

Hear, hear! We did, it was, and no, it didn't. Thanks for a great event Don (and your friends from the Jordaan)!

It was a wonderful afternoon! I took some cell phone pics.

Some very nice bikes turned up:

Typical for Amsterdam: chain your well-used bike to whatever is at hand:

At the halfway point:

The finish at Cafť l'Affiche:

I only now notice that Koga ProLuxe bike Beautifull. 1979 model and it looks in top shape and very original to me, including the leather wrap.

What a superb day it has been! Paul, Melvin and Maarten thanks for coming, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. It was really nice meeting you guys in person and your presence certainly gave the event an extra bit of Classic, with the beautifull rides you brought along.
Thanks to the KNMI for predicting the bad weather that only arrived after the event was done. I wonder if Melvin got home by bike...

I hope you forgive me all the loose ends in the organisation, as this was a first time for me. Even though the motto was 'badly prepared'.
After a couple of hours of arranging pictures, Jasper (the photographer) and I have made a modest selection and posted it on flickr. Here's the link, feel free to copy the pics. If you want a larger file, pm me.

I especially like this one:

Thanks to everyone!

Cheers, Don

That looks like a grand day out. Maybe on some future visit I'll get to take part in something similar. I particularly like Bacchus there front and center!

Very sad I missed it due to rowing race scheduled at the same time. Sorry Don.
Seemed like it would be a nice ride and the pictures proof it was.

Was Mel making some extra km for L'eroica ?
