I wish I still have my early 80's Bell Tourlite and Avenir helmets to post, but they pretty much just fell apart from use....

Saw a Vetta like this at a thift the other day. Thought about picking it up as a "collectable" but figured (correctly) that there isn't much market for these. All the foam padding was long gone.

However, right next to it was a vintage Buco scooter helmet - should be a nice flip.

I had a Bell that looked a lot like the Vetta. We called them "red stripes."
I'm glad I no longer have it. It was one gooner helmet.

I got rid of my hair nets but this Skid Lid just keeps hanging around. Another gomer, indeed.

I've got a strap-helmet from denmark, no pics yet. I think they're more for keeping your cap from flying off than for protection. And avoiding a no-helmet ticket these days

so what be the LAW stateside on bicycle helmets?
Ive been gone 15 years.

Finland passed a mandatory helmet law with an effective date of January, 2003. It covers all ages, but there is no fine associated with breaking the law. but it is standard practice, all little kids have helments, most all of adults have helmets.

My wife gave me sh it about not wearing one so I have been wearing one all summer depending on where I go.- honestly I dont notice it on anymore.

I still refuse to wear a downhilll skiing helmet.

Depends on where you live. In my town I think it's $100 fine. Most of the time they just run your ID and send you on your way, I'm told. I always wear a helmet (A modern Rudy Project) if I'm on any kind of real ride. But if I'm just bouncing across town to the store in jeans and sneakers I find it kinda silly. I'm pro helmet, anti helmet-law... not their business in my mind. Lilly always wears one btw.

Back on track. I find the strap helmets to be pretty cool in a retro kind of way, but I don't think I'd wear either one of those "gomer" things. I do remember my first was a Giro with the Lycra cover. Sure am glad they've come a long way since then

My mom used to have a bell helmet, similar to that of the Vetta pictured above.

I rarely ride with a helmet, myself. But I haven't gone on long rides in a long time. I think if I started touring or riding on busier roads it might be different. No fines (or enforced laws) in OH for helmets, that I know of.

Haha ! Of course some of them are too small, one is not in the best shape inside either....a few of them get worn on special rides when I put on old leather lace ups, wool jersey and top it off with a hairnet !

Cheers,

Joe

Bought new in 1973. It has thousands of miles on it. It was bright white when new and the chin straps were bright red.

from 1972 to 1976 I had a Kucherik super-padded "hairnet" like the left center image in JPZ's post. After my concussion I graduated to a Bell BIker (long before hard helmets became fashionable), and eventually to my current Giro Xen, which is the best (and costliest) helmet I have ever owned.

Picked up a Cinelli hairnet helmet off the curb, it needed to be aired out a bit but it's in great condition. It fits well although I'm not sure if the sizing is 'correct'.

It's the same model as this red one, except it is black on the outside and white on the inside. I think I'll wear it should I get a drop bar bike.

How much do you think this would be worth? This is the kind I mentioned above.

Mine was a gift from my old team, and it came with a matching bike!

(What you can't see is a big piece of broken-off styrofoam above one of the ears. It's time I got a new helmet.)

I bouhgt one of these in 1975 after being run off the road by an 18-wheeler. My straps were white when I got it - they were more like a worn-out undershirt gray by the time I retired some years later. It was on my head across the You Ess Ay in 1980. Weighed a ton -- okay, only a poiund, but it sure felt like a ton at first. Since 1975, I've ridden maybe 20 miles total without a helmet, certainly no more than that. Ugly and useless as they may be, I'm rather fond of my head and it's contents.

You can see the Helmet posted above in this picture tacken in "79. You can see how white it was and how red the straps were. None of the equipment looked that good by the end of my tour.

I still have this all foam Bell helmet hanging in the basement along with my wife's Bell that is a few years newer. Of course the top of my head is cut off in this picture but that is normal because at 6'6" your head is almost always cut off.

Kids, a high speed crash will teach you the value of a helmet. I have, and will continue to, wear one 99% of the time. Here is my old Bell that saved my head a few times.
