Is Tektro Really The Only Nutted Side-Pull Brake Maker???

I have an older bike that I'm bringing up to date. It didn't come with a back brake on there, and the front is a nutted A-II from Dia Compe. LBS said that would be impossible to find - fine. I'll keep it around for something else. But, all I can find that makes nutted side-pull brakes is Tektro. Seriously?? I feel they aren't very well made. 1) Opinions on Tektro? @) Any ideas where to find nutted side-pulls?? Thanks!

I don't have their side pulls on my bikes, but I do have a pair of Tektro cantis on my tourer and two bikes with Tektro levers. These are an excellent value for the money. Seems pretty durable too.

Though if you are talking about their el cheapo BMX brakes, I think I'd have to pass on those.

I'd have no hesitation about these however

I have Tektro's on both of my main rides, and they work fine.

Tektro would be my choice for a rebuild, especially if you have to deal with longer reach.

Edit: check out my Traveler in my signature. I needed a recessed version for the front and a nutted one for the rear.

Agreed. Tektro dual pivots are as good as anything out there.

Along the same line though... where can I buy nutted dual pivot brakes? VO used to sell them but now it seems they only carry the super long reach variety in nutted. Harris Cyclery is about the only other place I've found them.

Giant's latest cruisers come with nutted, long-reach dual-pivot brake calipers which carry no brand name; likely made for Giant, or not sold here in the States. Quality of these brakes is on par with the cheaper Tektro 800A.

Otherwise, Tektro is your only option. They work, they're reasonably priced, and they do the job. Can't say that their better brakes have a bad finish either; no worse than entry-level Campy - if not better.

If you can't find them anywhere else, try eBay. There's usually a seller with one form or another of nutted Tektro dual-pivot up there.

If you are trying to make an old bike into a working old bike without spending new bike money, these are really quite good. I bought their levers a year ago and they are perfect for what I wanted: Modern on the hoods riding, good grip, no sti. For my budget purposes, friction dt's or stem shifters are preffered because I can put a lot of combinations of drivetrain components on as I acquire them without compatibility worries (more or less). those breaks will do the same job any others will do, and if you think the levers are lacking in comfort, tektro's levers are great too,

got a tektro rear ubrake.. works just fine. The tektro brand to me to me means "very functional but maybe a little generic looking"

If your going for new and not vintage brakes Tektros are best choice on a Vintage bike work great reasonable price and they come in lengths to fit almost any build. Your other option is to check out ebay or your local bike coop for a vintage Dia-compe despite what your LBS said they are extremely common and easy to find if you look.

Tektro's are great - my mate has a pair of R358s with nut fittings and they stop on a penny.

Am I wrong in thinking you can buy two rear brakes of any recessed brake you want, cut off the brake bolt and simply fit a nut + washer?

For nutted or recessed mounting? They come both ways, and you can't convert recessed to nutted (with exception to a recessed front being re-purposed as a nutted rear). Converting nutted to recessed is foolhardy, since enough recessed brakes already exist on the market.

You can buy two recessed rears and convert them to recessed mounting on a frame that was built for nutted brakes, but the frame and fork have to be drilled. I bought mine at a bike swap cheap. The logos are gone. I assume that they're Tektros, but I've never seen any quite like them. They're the best brakes I own.

How about a few pics of the bike and brake in question? It is always possible someone here has something that will work. How old was the person who said you will never find that brake? If he was under 25 he is likely the type that if it isn't in the store at that second or been ina magazine in the last year it doesn't exist.

I agree about the Tektros. I persoanlly have not used them but I only hear good things about them from those here, and when I get fed up with the MAFACS on ym Hetchins it will likely get Tektros.

DiaCompe may make something but they will certainly be pricier.

Here are two sets of DC with nuts https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...tted&_osacat=0

OH your post does say are looking only for daul pivot (DP) brakes? These are nice brakes and the price (for now) seems OK

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-600-...item4607eafddf

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-600-...item416b3454dd

If I had a use for these I would snatch them up.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Shim...item416aa9c754

OH back to your post and pics of the bike..... I and likely most everyone here assumes your are talking about an older "10spd" would that be correct? What do you mean by "bring it up to date"? Again are you only looking for a DP brake or just want a good brake? I don't have any DPs currently and I have no complaints (aside from some squeaking) about my braking power.

for my two '70s 531 frame 700c conversions, i used two different sizes of tektro side-pulls. on the rear of these two, i used their r559 extra long reach model, and on the front, used the r539. harris cyclery sells them individually. the r559 would have worked for the front, but it looked unnecessary. the result is a fairly elegant finish, and excellent braking, especially with the addition of kool-stop salmon pads added to the tektro holders.

Quote from Velo Orange site:
"Another neat thing about these brakes is they fit frames made for either recessed or nutted brake bolts. Two bolt spacers are included to allow them to fit most older frames, as well as modern frames." regarding these Dia Compe Centerpulls:
https://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...ull-brake.html

My friend used to have a set of these & we used them on a frame made for nutted brakes & a frame for recessed brakes as the quote says.

If one had those special '2 tiered' or whatever they are called nuts that came with those Dia Compe's can
one more readily adapt other recessed nut brakes to nutted applications???

These are great looking brakes and if they came in a longer reach I would have put them on my Hetchins. But I think the OP is looking for sidepulls and likely has his mind set on them.

Those are super nice, but unfort. the person who had the bike before me made the decision to switch to an extinct sidepull and did away with the mech that holds the cable housing and adjusting mechanism in place. And only with a front brake...... So, I can not find another sidepull of the same kind. I seriously can't find a Tecktro 540 NORMAL reach brake set either though. Which would solve one problem. I have 27" tires and would like to stay at that size. I need to replace the rims/spokes, but that's another problem in it self... Post up soon asking advice about it too lol.

The 610's are flawed with the same faults as their 1970's predecessors. They work best with wide touring rims or excessive shims on the brake pads - or not at all.

Everything is available on Amazon -often through Niagara, or one of the other major online storefronts that use Amazon as a partner. Amazon themselves carries many items themselves which are available for Prime free shipping. Whenever someone says, "who has X?" the answer is almost always Amazon. Sometimes there is stuff that can only be found at Harris, Peter White, Rivendell or VO. With VO, most of their stuff can be found on Amazon too. Even Nashbar has most of their offerings on Amazon although there is still some items they offer that can only be found through their separate website.

I had posted this in another thread, but probably more appropriate here.

On the '85 Trek 400 I am building up, it came stock with Diacompe sidepulls. The front is recessed and the rear is nutted. It also came with 27" wheels and I am switching it to 700c. The stock brakes will reach, but I think I am going to use Tektro or equivalent dual pivots. And Tektro or equivalent levers, since I have to replace the hoods anyhow.

Are these levers the equivalent of Tektro R100 or R200? I know they are made by Tektro for Origin 8 (as well as Cane Creek). Any other levers you guys would recommend? Cheap is good

Nutted Tektros come from J&B Importers, most shops can get them for you. Best way to order front/rear separate in any combo you want.

Those are not the same levers as the Tektro's. They are a copy of the earlier Shimano areo levers with the narrow hoods.

If you want the Origin8 version of the Tektro these are the ones you are looking for:
